Adam Griffies takes a look at last night’s gripping draw with Chelsea.

Alright that wasn’t it?

People say the Capital One Cup doesn’t matter. A lot of Evertonians and Mancunians are of that opinion at the moment, funnily enough. Maybe it doesn’t matter.

But what does matter, always, is Liverpool versus Chelsea.

So many titanic battles over the decade-plus. But could we do it this time? Could we trade blows with a Mourinho side sitting five points clear at the top of the Premier League while we languish in eighth?

Okay, recent performances have been encouraging but amidst that resurgence we have yet to come up against a genuinely sophisticated, strong outfit. A Chelsea.

The questions were justified.

And the Reds’ answer was emphatic. An emphatic ‘yes’. Yes, we can compete with the best. We made a statement.

From the outset we were vibrant. A vibrant, proactive, cohesive unit. As we have been for the last few games, in fact. The rigid, contrived hesitancy of a few months ago seems very much forgotten.

The change of system, to 3-4-2-1, has been the driving force behind our recent upturn. I think we’d agree unanimously there. Credit must go to Rodgers for that change. Although, having said that, we don’t know who came up with it. Pascoe is capable of a masterstroke like that, isn’t he? Nobody knows. Marsh? I have to admit, I doubt it. Personally I’m going for Emre Can. “3-4-2-1”, he softly crooned, in between puffs of his cigar. “Play me right centre-back.”

I mention Can primarily because I’m falling in love with the guy. Penalty incident aside, he was terrific last night. Strong, assured and possessing a ridiculous swagger on the ball. I gather that Jamie Carragher had a bit of a go at his first half performance on Sky at half-time. That’s why I don’t bother listening to pundits most of the time. Honestly, it’s so futile. Just leave the room and make a cup of tea. To criticise Can, who’s just turned 21, for a single error of judgment against one of the best players on the planet at the moment was hopelessly unnecessary. Defenders’ mistakes are going to stand out simply because of their close proximity to the goal they’re defending. The fact that that was his first noticeable error in a Liverpool shirt shows what a prodigious prospect Emre Can is.

Can isn’t the only player who simply looks a better footballer since our change of shape. The German’s two defensive partners, Sakho and Skrtel, look as comfortable as anything in the 3-4-2-1. The former’s game looks tailor-made for playing on the left of a three. He has the pace and power to cover ground in the channel, and the composure and intelligence to step forward with and without the ball when required.

I’m still convinced that Wayne Rooney’s opening goal at Old Trafford a little while back was caused by Dejan Lovren’s failure to engage Antonio Valencia in the channel as soon as he had passed Allen and Lallana. Lovren was positioned as if he was part of a central two, when in reality he was playing on the left of a three. Forget Brad Jones falling over, Lovren was way out of position.

Further forward, Leiva and Henderson look revitalised in the 3-4-2-1. The wing-backs are having fun, as they should. And I feel like there is even more to come from them in an attacking sense.

The front three, or the two and the one, looked dangerous last night. As they have done for the last few weeks. Again, the system is to thank for that. Philippe Coutinho, who looks to have decided to start taking the piss out of the opposition again, was everywhere. Steven Gerrard buzzed around, oozing class, and was unlucky to not get a goal. Raheem Sterling, positioned most like a striker of any of the Reds’ 11 players, but still with the freedom to roam, was typically dynamic. The only criticism I would have of his performance, is I don’t think he ran directly at Terry and Cahill enough, preying on their vulnerability to oncoming, pacey runners.

Basically, I wish he’d have done more of what he did for his goal. Which isn’t much of a criticism, as he did do it for his goal. It did happen. And what a goal it was. I said after his goal at Bournemouth, that his acceleration, composure and finish was reminiscent of a young Thierry Henry. Last night was like that, but better. If he can make a habit of doing things like Thierry Henry, I’m willing to go with that.

The atmosphere from then on was a sight to behold. A sound to behold. If Gerrard’s shot goes in off the post shortly after our equaliser, the roof comes off of Anfield.

As I mention Gerrard, I should probably say something about the sub. I liked it. And I was over the moon Brendan had the balls to do it. Not to boast, in fact, absolutely to boast, I did turn to my mate as the second half began and say “Lallana for Gerrard 70 minutes.” Not because Steven Gerrard isn’t a good footballer, or wasn’t playing well. Not at all. But because it was vital that we retained our intensity right through to 90. It’s natural for a 34-year-old’s levels to wain slightly in a game as breathless as that.

Stevie went off. Got a huge round of applause. And Adam Lallana came within inches of making it 2-1. Happy days. Good sub, Brendan.

Before last night’s game, I just wanted us to be going to Stamford Bridge still in the tie. We’re doing that. Repeat that performance, perhaps with a bit more cutting edge and luck (refereeing decisions), and we’ve got a real chance. I’m strangely confident.

Sturridge winner off the bench, anyone?

CAPITAL ONE CUP (SEMIS)

LIVERPOOL V CHELSEA (1-1)

ANFIELD 20.01.2015

PERMULAAN

Emre Can- Skrtel- Sakho terus digandingkan di back 3.

Emre Can melakukan contact namun Hazard pada pendapat saya agak soft foul. Ini mengambil kira Hazard jump into the challenge

dan bukan Can jump into the attacker. Hazard want the penalty.

perlawanan.

MORENO MARKOVIC-CAN

Barca dibawah kendalian Guardiola.

LUCAS LEIVA (my MOTM)

LUCAS = 102 touches

Willian + Costa = 100 touches

Hazard = 73 touches (tertinggi dalam pasukan chelsea)

Gerrard = 73 touches

Rodgers menyempitkan parameter taktikal. Membuatkan Markovic seakan akan bermain attacking midfielder. Cuma moreno di kawasan lebih wide.

Liverpool attack from centre dan down middle

Ini adalah formula memecahkan loop hole Chelsea. Jika musim lepas, Liverpool bermain diluar parameter defensive Chelsea.

Stephen McGarty takes an optimistic look at the long-term future of the club, with many reasons for why the future looks bright at Anfield.

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 17, 2015: Liverpool's Fabio Borini celebrates scoring the first goal against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Villa Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Uncertainty. It’s plaguing us. For the first time in a decade we’re not even entirely sure who our captain will be next season, and after the most Bi-polar 18 months in recent memory, it feels like the immediate future of the club sits on a knife-edge.

So perhaps, in these times of uncertainty, it’s best to stay positive. So I’ve written this article to list the many reasons, which suggest a very bright and successful future for the club in the long term. Lets just try to ignore the short term for now.

World Class young talent

Football - Liverpool FC Preseason Tour 2014 - Olympiacos FC v Liverpool FC

I’ve been one of the many who’ve bemoaned our lack of world-class players; we arguably don’t have a single world-class player in our squad.

What we do have whatever is a number of 18-23 year old players who could all reach that top level within the game, players with the potential to be World Cup and Champions League winners.

Sterling, Markovic, Coutinho, Can, Moreno, Manquillo and Origi are all showing tremendous qualities for their age.

If the incredibly unlikely were to happen, and all of them were to reach their full potential, at Liverpool and at the same time, then Liverpool are only 4 players off having one of the top sides in the world by 2020.

We’d all love to be able to spend £40m+ on ready made stars, but needs must, and those 7 cost less than £60m all together. In the short term our transfer policies has been awful, but perhaps in the long term it has its merits.

An Academy System set to Explode

READING, ENGLAND - Wednesday, March 12, 2014: Liverpool's players look dejected after losing 5-4 on penalties after a 4-4 draw against Reading during the FA Youth Cup Quarter-Final match at the Madejski Stadium. Jordan Rossiter, Harry Wilson, Daniel Trickett-Smith, Daniel Cleary, Jordan Williams, Sergi Canos, Sheyi Ojo (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In my lifetime I’ve seen the LFC academy produce top talent such as Gerrard, Owen and Carragher, before drying up for over a decade. In recent years we’ve seen good squad players like Jon Flanagan and Andre Wisdom come out of the Academy, but it’s the next 5-6 years that I believe the squad will be hit with an influx of talented young players.

In 2009, over a decade since Gerrard had made the step up to the first team, Rafael Benitez brought in coaches from across Europe to completely transform the Academy, revamp the facilities and change the way youth prospects were coached. The most well known of these coaches was Rodolfo Borrell who had previously worked at Barcelona’s famed La Masia, with Messi and Fabregas amongst his many pupils. Borrell left the club last year, but the principles of developing technically capable and tactically astute players have become the foundation of all the Academy’s work and the future looks much brighter as a result.

As this work is all about the meticulous player development, it should no surprise that those who have been subjected to these new methods for longer (the younger players) are on average much better than those that came before them, ignoring the anomaly of Sterling. I’d list all of the potential stars but there really are too many of them, so instead I implore you to watch as many u21 and u18 games as you can this year, they’re both incredibly entertaining teams to watch, full of speed, flair and trickery. The FA Youth Cup is probably the best time to see the u18’s at their best, with some of the young overachievers in the u21 side such as Jordan Rossiter and Sheyi Ojo showing just how good they are against players of their own age. You can see them play Derby tonight at 7pm live on LFCTV.

Anfield 2.0

Main Stand Expansion / Redevelopment (Photo: Liverpool FC)

I mentioned earlier in the article the fact that we are unlikely to be challenging for either of the two major trophies (Premier League and Champions League) until our young players mature and hit their peak. As annoying as it will be to sit by and wait, at least we’ll be able to enjoy it in a larger stadium, one which will be of great benefit to the club financially in the long run.

This may seem like a weak argument to some, but the fact that all of Europe’s elite clubs (bar Chelsea, but they have Abramovich) have stadiums larger than us is no coincidence. A larger Anfield is a long-term improvement, which can never be taken away. Unlike a star player who can decide his future is elsewhere, the additional income this will provide will benefit the club decades into the future.

The point I’m trying to make here is this; Liverpool Football Club is in a better position now than we have been in decades. I’m not a natural optimist, and I get angry at our poor defending and lack of a recognized goal-scorer (or goalkeeper for that matter), but the facts cannot be denied. Liverpool as a force in English and European football may feel like a journey short lived, but it is really a Journey just begun.

Bright Red Future – Three Reasons for Optimism at Liverpool FC

Jose Mourinho (r): Wants Steven Gerrard to stay in England

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has expressed disappointment that Steven Gerrard is leaving the Premier League and joked he should try to sign the former England captain on loan.

Gerrard will move to the Los Angeles Galaxy when his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season.

The midfielder was courted in 2005 by Chelsea, only for a dramatic change of mind to see him stay at Liverpool, where he has played his entire club career to date.

Speaking after Chelsea's 1-1 Capital One Cup first-leg draw at Anfield on Tuesday, Mourinho discussed the 34-year-old's situation.

Mourinho was asked on BBC Radio 5 Live if he should have a word with Gerrard and persuade him to stay, and said: "Or to get him on loan."

The tongue-in-cheek remark comes after long-serving former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard ended up with Manchester City this season, after an apparent deal with New York City FC seemed to mean his Premier League career was over.

Mourinho said of Gerrard: "I'm not happy he leaves. I would love the Premier League to keep always the best players.

"I think he has more than enough quality to play in the Premier League. In spite (of the fact) he's my opponent, I feel sorry that he's leaving."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho both felt their sides should have scored more in their Capital One Cup semi-final first leg.

However, the Blues boss had cause to be the happier with the 1-1 draw which makes his team favourites heading into next week’s second encounter.

Chelsea were indebted to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for ensuring there was still something to play for in the second leg as the Belgium international kept the hosts at bay with a string of saves after the break.

“Obviously Liverpool didn’t deserve to lose but I go (away) frustrated,” said Mourinho. “We had lots of situations where we recovered the ball in a low block, we recover the ball so many times, and we were facing a three defenders tactical system with lots of space to counter-attack.

“Eden (Hazard), Willian and Diego (Costa) were in great positions but we missed so many passes. Recover the ball, lose the ball. Exactly the opposite that happened against Swansea (in a 5-0 win on Saturday). Against Swansea, (we would) recover the ball, (pick) the right pass and choice and counter-attack.

“Today it was fantastic defensive work, recover the ball against a very good team with creative players, fast players, but we were not efficient in the transition. To score only one goal frustrates me.”

Chelsea went ahead through Hazard’s 18th-minute penalty but that was their only shot on target, and a brilliant solo effort from Raheem Sterling levelled things up.

Liverpool should have gone on to win, given the chances they created, and Rodgers said: “I thought we were outstanding. They will probably feel happy with the draw because we definitely deserve to win.

“Our performance level was at a top level. It was a real good game but they had one shot on target, which was the penalty.

“Our creation was at a high level. The only thing missing was the final finish. It was an outstanding team performance and sets it up perfectly for the second leg.

“You would expect Chelsea to open up even more playing at home and that will suit us even more.

“There is absolutely no doubt we can go to the second leg and get the performance we need and we will have confidence in that.”

Liverpool could have striker Daniel Sturridge back for that after he stepped up his rehabilitation from a thigh injury which has kept him out since August 31. In his absence, Sterling, who was given a week off recently, has filled a void and he took his chance brilliantly for the equaliser.

“It was very good. The rest has done him the world of good. He was outstanding,” added Rodgers. “He has that ability to run in behind but he can also exploit the space in front of the defender.

“His speed was frightening to get in and finish off his left side, it was a wonderful goal and he certainly deserved that for his performance.”

Liverpool could also have a penalty, with Diego Costa appearing to handle while on the ground, and Courtois seemed to handle outside the area.

“I was so disappointed we never got at least one penalty. It is a clear handball by Costa so how we didn’t get that…”

Rodgers added. “Their goalkeeper, who had to be outstanding, has also handballed it outside the area.”

Liverpool were unlucky to draw after dominating Chelsea in Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final, thanks to some Brendan Rodgers tactical genius, writes Jack Lusby.

Football - Football League Cup - Semi-Final 1st Leg - Liverpool FC v Chelsea FC

In what was arguably the performance of the season so far for Liverpool, Rodgers’ side were extremely unlucky to take just a 1-1 draw from Tuesday night’s match at a freezing Anfield.

After a clumsy foul from Emre Can, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard converted a first-half penalty to put the Blues one up.

However, Raheem Sterling’s 59th-minute equaliser ensured next week’s trip to Stamford Bridge will be a tasty encounter.

Lining up against former sensei and oft-proclaimed tactical genius Jose Mourinho, Rodgers faced a tough challenge, but showed a formidable nous as he shifted the game in Liverpool’s favour.

The Chelsea Block

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 27, 2014: Liverpool take on Chelsea, with all 11 players inside their own penalty area, during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

What with this first leg taking place at Anfield, Mourinho will likely have been content to take a draw from the first whistle — Chelsea are yet to lose at Stamford Bridge in the league this season, representing impressive home form.

This showed as the Portuguese set his side up in a hugely defensive manner, with a back four of Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry and Felipe Luis shielded by defensive midfielders Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel.

Furthermore, when Liverpool were in possession, and that was a lot, Willian and chief playmaker Cesc Fabregas withdrew into defensive roles.

This made Liverpool’s attacking game a difficult proposition, despite their phenomenal initiative from the start.

While some great pace-led play from Sterling had Cahill calling for his teammates to “relax” on 14 minutes, Liverpool were predominantly limited from to long-range attempts in the first half.

KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES, ENGLAND - Monday, January 5, 2015: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard scores the second goal against AFC Wimbledon during the FA Cup 3rd Round match at the Kingsmeadow Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Steven Gerrard’s attempt forced a top-quality save from Thibaut Courtois on 16 minutes — one of many from the Belgian goalkeeper on the night, with Liverpool having 20 attempts on goal.

Ten minutes later, Lazar Markovic’s instinctive half-volley failed to test Courtois, the winger’s attempt a poor resolution to some fine intricate attacking play.

Sterling, operating in his new auxiliary No. 9 role, was too often found in wide areas, leaving these central spaces free for the clearances of Cahill and Terry.

Overall, Liverpool were guilty of attempting to play the ball too often in the first half, with Chelsea parking the bus.

Withdrawing at 1-0 down at half-time, could Rodgers counter this Chelsea block?

1. Moreno and Markovic

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno in action against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Markovic and Alberto Moreno, Rodgers’ established wing-back pairing in the 3-4-2-1, were an effective force in the first half — the pair contributed comfortably in attack.

Importantly, Markovic played a vital role in hampering Hazard’s progress in the Liverpool half, too.

But in the second half, Rodgers’ initiative saw the pair take a more focal role in Liverpool’s build-up play, and in turn this helped the Reds to pick apart Chelsea’s solid back line.

Markovic in particular probed dangerously from the right flank, attempting six dribbles – and also showing he was up for the physical challenge defensively too.

Meanwhile, while the Reds seemed less inclined to pass to Moreno in the first half, the Spaniard was given more license after the interval, and this troubled an increasingly shaky Ivanovic.

Drawing Chelsea’s block apart, this manoeuvre allowed two of Liverpool’s key players to thrive in the second half.

2. Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool’s Brain

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers talked Coutinho up as the hub of everything exciting for Liverpool in the summer, and the No. 10 is growing into this role following the change of system of late.

The Brazilian was bright in the first half, and arguably Liverpool’s most effective player, but Matic and Mikel often came tight to the midfielder as soon as he received the ball, as well as a deep-lying Fabregas when required.

The deployment of Moreno and Markovic even further up the field, and their added responsibility, allowed Coutinho to find a lot more space in front of the Chelsea defence.

Matic and Mikel confused each other attimes, and their dual-deployment was a mistake from Mourinho.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 8, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against Chelsea's Nemanja Matic during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Utilising two defensive midfielders should effectively ensure a clean sheet, but the pair must work together, and Matic and Mikel were abysmal in terms of communication.

Aided by this, Coutinho noticeably grew in confidence in the second half, taking more shots on and driving at Chelsea’s defence.

In the second half, with added space, Coutinho was devastating, creating chance after chance — he made four key passes, as well as five crosses, over the 90.

Raheem Sterling, Liverpool’s No. 9?

Football - Football League Cup - Semi-Final 1st Leg - Liverpool FC v Chelsea FC

Coutinho’s liberation, and Moreno’s growing role, impacted hugely on Sterling in the second half, too.

In the first 45, a convincing argument could be made for the introduction of Fabio Borini—the peripheral figure may not be the most effective striker, or the most aware, but he has been nurtured as a striker, and typically remains in a central role.

Sterling was guilty of drifting wide too often in the first half, at one point taking the ball off Moreno’s foot, with the left-back then at odds with the move.

At the end of the aforementioned move, the ball did make it into Chelsea’s box, but found no one—Sterling, as Liverpool’s striker, wasn’t in the box, and the Blues made an easy clearance.

By forcing his wing-backs even higher up the pitch, and therefore allowing Coutinho more freedom, Sterling was naturally in a more effective central role.

The perfect example of this was Sterling’s goal—allowed time and space in a central area, the 20-year-old drove between Matic and Mikel, through a flailing Chelsea defence, and through on goal.

This equaliser was the work of a tactical masterstroke from Brendan Rodgers who, despite an ultimately disappointing result given the context of the tie, showed his ability to outmanoeuvre the most tactically aware of managers.

Does Brendan Rodgers deserve the praise after Liverpool’s performance on Tuesday night? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool drew 1-1 with Chelsea in their League Cup semi-final first-leg clash on Tuesday night, and we round-up the reaction from fans, players and journalists.

The Reds may not have picked up a victory against Jose Mourinho’s side at Anfield, but this was undeniably their finest performance of the season.

The intensity, quality and pace had echoes of last season’s brilliance, and there was not a single Liverpool player who didn’t impress greatly.

Lucas Leiva was phenomenal in the middle of the park, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling were electrifying at times and Lazar Markovic continued his excellent run of form at wing-back. The defence also did themselves proud on the whole.

Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty was Chelsea’s only effort on target throughout the game, while the terrific Thibaut Courtois was tested time and time again by well-hit Liverpool strikes.

Sterling’s superb individual effort gives Liverpool genuine hope of still qualifying for the final, despite the fact Mourinho’s men are the clear favourites to progress still.

Here is how the Liverpool fans and media reacted to an entertaining game on Merseyside.

“theres always tommorrow” in the forums:

First game this year that has had me on the edge of my seat. I said before the match that Sterling would be out-muscled…how wrong I was. The lad had a great game. No one played badly and so many should be candidates for Man of the Match. Could be the turning point of the season….confidence is everything.

“fivetimesredmen” in the forums:

Outstanding performance from the Red Men against an excellent Chelsea team – dont want to see any negatives in here tonight because that deserves nothing but praise. You can see this team progressing again as a group which was a worry early in the season cos we weren’t. Coutinho was MOTM for me.

Raheem Sterling celebrates his superb second-half goal

Raheem Sterling celebrates his superb second-half goal

Raheem Sterling’s superb second-half goal means Liverpool go into their Capital One Cup semi-final second leg with Chelsea with the scores level at 1-1, despite dominating at Anfield.

Chelsea took the lead on 18 minutes after Emre Can brought down Eden Hazard in the area, before the Belgian dusted himself off to slot the penalty past compatriot Simon Mignolet.

Sterling equalised on the hour with a superb run and finish, slotting past Thibaut Courtois from just inside the area after shrugging off Nemanja Matic.

Steven Gerrard hit the post and Adam Lallana forced a fine save from Courtois as Liverpool desperately searched for a winner to take a lead to Stamford Bridge for the second leg, but the hosts had to settle for a draw.
