Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers described returning Steven Gerrard's performance against Leicester as "outstanding" - but admitted he will continue to manage his captain's workload.

Gerrard returned to Rodgers’ starting line-up having been rested at the weekend, and inspired his side to a third away league win of the season on Tuesday night.

The 34-year-old's absence came amid reports of a bust-up with his manager – something Rodgers firmly denies – and the Reds captain is still mulling over whether to sign a new contract on offer.

But Rodgers insists the Reds skipper remains an essential part of the team and hailed his display in a 3-1 win over the Foxes.

“He’s a very important player for us and you saw that tonight,” he said.

“You’ve seen the energy in his legs and his influence in the game – especially as it wore on. It was an outstanding performance from Steven and an excellent goal.

“He’s not 24 anymore. For me, it’s about mapping out the rest of the season for him and the amount of games to play. You have to do that with players at this stage of their career.

“It’s what you have to do as a manager – plan forwards. At this stage of his career it’s about the level of the game he plays.”

Rodgers joked: “He and I obviously speak every day but I think we had to speak yesterday to make sure we hadn’t fallen out with each other."

Jordan Henderson (l): Hopes Steven Gerrard stays at Anfield

Jordan Henderson (l): Hopes Steven Gerrard stays at Anfield

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson believes the club have to keep Steven Gerrard "for many years to come" after the captain provided a timely reminder of his qualities.

The 34-year-old scored his first from open play since January in the 3-1 win at Leicester, having also been involved in the two goals either side of that at the King Power Stadium.

Gerrard is mulling over a new contract offer from the club, with his current deal due to expire in the summer, and, while manager Brendan Rodgers said he would be given time to do so, Henderson is keen to play alongside his inspirational captain for a few more years.

"He's a massive player for us and a great leader," said the Reds vice-captain.

"We need to keep him for as long as we can. I hope he stays for many years to come.

"I thought Steven was outstanding for us. It was a real captain's performance from him.

"He worked so hard for the team and he got his rewards with his goal."

Rodgers has always insisted sentiment plays no part in his decision-making - highlighted by Gerrard's benching for the Champions League match against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu and last Saturday's 16th anniversary of his debut.

However, he does admit there is a special case to be made for the handling of his captain when it comes to playing time.

But he has had to abandon, for now, the deep-lying role he saw Gerrard playing for the remainder of his career at the club after circumstances - namely a poor run of results - dictated the change which has seen Lucas Leiva take over the defensive midfield position and forced his captain further forward.

"People talk about being fair with everyone," said Rodgers.

"As a manager, managing certain players it is unfair to treat everyone the same - especially someone of Steven Gerrard's stature.

"I had a great respect for Steven from the outside and an even greater one working with him on the inside.

"When I came in 18 months ago people were talking about whether he was going to be able to play in how I work and last year he was absolutely magnificent, scoring 14 goals in all competitions.

"Irrespective of the player, the status, for me it is what is best for the team.

"I pick Steven Gerrard because I still think he can influence a game for us.

"When I set the team up last year he was a playmaker playing behind the midfield as we had three super quick players up front in Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling.

"We looked at it again this year and we don't have that similar type of game so we have to change the structure of that.

"That meant he can still have a greater influence but maybe I need to pick him in a different role."

That different role has coincided with Liverpool's best unbeaten run of the season, incredibly just three matches with the Champions League draw against Ludogorets followed by two wins, but it is a starting point from which Henderson believes they can build.

"Football changes very quickly," he added.

"It's been a good few days for us. We've picked up six points and hopefully we can get another three on the weekend.

"If we can make it nine points in a week that would be massive for us. We'll go into the Sunderland game with plenty of confidence.

"We have to stay together as a group and work as hard as we possibly can. If we do that then the results will keep coming."

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson says captain Steven Gerrard is likely to sign another contract and is well placed to take on a coaching position at Anfield when his playing days are over.

Thompson told Sky Sports News HQ that Gerrard’s goal in the 3-1 win over Leicester City showed he was still “happy” at the club, and that coaching opportunities would present themselves when the 34-year-old’s playing days were over.

“I think he is more than happy, I think he will remain at Liverpool for at least 12 months, and I would quite imagine that if he wants to, he will remain in a very high level on the coaching staff,” Thompson said.

“Even with the likes of Steven - he’s been there a long time - does he have any right to be a manager straight away at Liverpool? It's a difficult one. It happened with Kenny Dalglish.

“I would think he would like to start coaching at a first team level. As a first team coach I think would be ideal, or an assistant manager.”

Thompson, who managed Liverpool in a temporary capacity, went on to say Gerrard’s role on the pitch had been “open to good debate”, and that he couldn’t still be “that rampaging midfield player”, but moving him further forward could provide the team “with the best of both worlds”.

Thompson also weighed in on goalkeeper Simon Mignolet’s recent run of poor form for Liverpool, in particular the own goal he conceded off his back against Leicester.

“Should he be replaced? No,” Thompson said.

“Because I still believe that, at this moment, Brad Jones is a good goalkeeper, but he’s not as good as Simon Mignolet. But if Mignolet's confidence is still going down, they might have to look to take him out of the firing line… we might need a new goalkeeper in January."

Commenting on another sidelined Liverpool player, Adam Lallana, Thompson said he could not understand why the attacking midfielder was not a mainstay of the Liverpool starting side.

“He brings something to the party. He is always progressive with his passing, he is always progressive with his movement, and I think he should be one of the main starters every match.”

Raheem Sterling, Jose Enrique and Jamie Carragher all took to Twitter shortly after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Tuesday night, whilst Steven Gerrard told teammates to stay focussed.

http://ift.tt/1yeub9y

After falling behind early on, goals from Adam Lallana, Gerrard and Jordan Henderson secured the Reds’ second successive victory — a result that lifts them to eighth in the Premier League table.

Captain Gerrard was back in the starting line-up after being rested for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Stoke City and he says the team are finally moving in the right direction.

“The performance was very good,” he told BT Sport after the game. “We didn’t get off to the start we wanted, but over the last couple of weeks we have shown great resilience and great character.

“We showed it again tonight. It could have been more than 3-1. I think all of us deserve a lot of credit. The last three performances have been superb and we need to keep trying to improve on that. It was a great team performance and a great three points.”

The 34-year-old added, “I’m happy with the goal but even more pleased with the win. It has been well documented this season that we haven’t been good enough.

“But we are on our way up; we’re defending better, sticking together and we’re a lot harder to beat. We need to keep moving in that direction.”

Liverpool now face Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday, before their final Champions League group stage match — a must-win encounter against Basel next Tuesday.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists captain Steven Gerrard can continue to influence matches and is far from finished as a pivotal player for the club.

The Reds midfielder, who is delaying making a decision on the offer of a new contract – believed to be a one-year deal – to extend his stay beyond the summer, scored the crucial second in a 3-1 at Leicester.

It helped Liverpool come from behind after Simon Mignolet‘s unfortunate own goal had been cancelled out by Adam Lallana’s 50th career league goal and, after Wes Morgan was sent off, Gerrard even had a hand in his side’s third for Jordan Henderson.

“At this moment in time I know Steven Gerrard,” said Rodgers, who restored his captain to the side after resting him against Stoke at the weekend.

“If I can manage his training and games he can still have real impact for this team.

“Even though he is approaching 35 at the end of this year he still has fantastic qualities but like every other player, no matter how good they are, the wheels are out and they are ready to land – but he is not ready to land yet.

“At this stage of his career it is about the level of the game and he is a very important player for us.

“He is not 24 any more. You have to do that (manage workloads) with players at this part of their career so it is about mapping out the rest of the season for him.

“I think you saw the energy in his legs tonight and his influence in the game, especially as it wore on. It was an outstanding performance from Steven and an excellent goal.” Gerrard appears in no rush to make a decision on his future.

“I’ll decide when I’m ready. There’s nothing to say on the contract at the moment,” he told BT Sport. “When there is, the fans have known me long enough, I’ll come out and say what I need to say.”

Gerrard’s demotion to the bench on Saturday, having been a high-profile substitute in the Bernabeu against Real Madrid in the Champions League last month, sparked rumours of a rift between him and his manager.

Rodgers insists nothing could be further from the truth but he did admit Gerrard and the team may be benefiting from the recent move to switch him to a more advanced role behind the striker.

“We spoke again yesterday just to confirm that we hadn’t fallen out with each other!” added the Reds boss. “As a coach you look at the players you have in order to get the best out of them.

“He has a natural instinct to get forward and join in and his combinations with Raheem (Sterling) and Rickie (Lambert) were very good and he arrived in that spot when the ball was cut back for a great finish.

“He was outstanding tonight but it is something that I have always known.”

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson, whose side have now lost six and drawn two since beating Manchester United in October, had a row with a disgruntled fan after another defeat.

“I had a spat with a fan towards the end. I don’t know what they are looking at at times,” he told BT Sport. “If they cannot see the players are having a proper go maybe they need to stay at home.

“The players are giving everything. I will always look for the positives. It is very easy for people to look at what we are not good at.

“I don’t like the commitment of my players being questioned. If they honestly think they are not committed, they are very wrong. Maybe that is why I stay in the stand.”

Liverpool earned a crucial victory over Leicester City on Tuesday night courtesy of goals from Adam Lallana, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson.

SIMON MIGNOLET- 5 (out of 10)

The 26-year-old had yet another poor evening. His woeful pass should have seen Esteban Cambiasoo put Leciester ahead, and seconds later the Belgian scored an own goal – admittedly somewhat unfortunate. Overall, simply not good enough.

Vote Mignolet as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 2, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet looks dejected after Leicester City's opening goal during the Premier League match at Filbert Way. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

JAVIER MANQUILLO- 6

An average display from the young Spaniard. Defensively he was relatively sound as always, but his attacking quality still leaves a lot to be desired. Replaced at half-time.

Vote Manquillo as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

MARTIN SKRTEL- 4.5

The Slovakian was the Reds’ worst player on the night. He was typically rash throughout, showing poor positional sense and erratic heading. Liverpool will always be weak at the back with Skrtel in the team.

Vote Skrtel as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

KOLO TOURE- 6.5

Toure put in another solid display, and is, rather unthinkably, Liverpool’s best centre-back at the moment. He was solid in all aspects of his play.

Vote Toure as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

GLEN JOHNSON- 5

A typically frustrating 90 minutes from Saturday’s match-winner. He produced a few decent attacking bursts, but lost the ball cheaply and failed to get back for Leicester’s opener. Shaky defensively, and really shouldn’t be playing regularly. Lost the ball high up the pitch for Leicester’s goal, allowing them to counter and exploit his space behind.

Vote Johnson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

LUCAS LEIVA- 7.5

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 2, 2014: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva in action against Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez during the Premier League match at Filbert Way. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Brazilian put in an excellent shift, and brings a solidarity to the Reds midfield. He broke up play well and kept things simple. His use of the ball and consistent fouling could improve if you’re being ultra harsh.

Vote Leiva as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

JORDAN HENDERSON- 6

The 24-year-old is struggling to hit top form at the moment, and he was extremely quiet all evening. The vice-captain did nothing wrong, however, and took his goal well at the end.

Vote Henderson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

STEVEN GERRARD- 6.5

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 2, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the second goal against Leicester City during the Premier League match at Filbert Way. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The skipper was used in attacking midfield, but he struggled to get into the game in the first-half. He took his goal expertly, however, and started to ooze class the more the game went on. Confidence is a massive thing, and that goal will give a huge boost to the under-fire 34-year-old.

Vote Gerrard as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

ADAM LALLANA- 7

The former Southampton man enjoyed one of his more influential performances for Liverpool. He always looked one of the most likely to create some magic in the final third, and he levelled the scores with a terrific finish. Subsituted in the second-half, as always.

Vote Lallana as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

The 19-year-old continues to blow a little hot and cold, and is yet to hit the heights of last season. He still looked dangerous from start to finish, however, winning several fouls in dangerous areas. Brilliant assist for Henderson’s goal, and played a part in Gerrard’s.

Given absolutely no protection from referee Lee Mason.

Vote Sterling as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

RICKIE LAMBERT- 5.5

Lambert was pretty poor, in truth. His movement was lacking throughout, and he didn’t really get into the game at all. Was hauled down by Wes Morgan though, which saw the Leicester defender sent-off. Offside five times, no shots and 8 aerial duels lost tells the story of his game.

Vote Lambert as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

Substitutes

ALBERTO MORENO (on for Manquillo 46)- 5.5

Offered little going forward, and looked dodgy defensively.

JOE ALLEN (on for Lallana 70)- 6

Largely unnoticed, barring one poor pass on the counter-attack.

DEJAN LOVREN (on for Sterling 90)- n/a

Only on the pitch for a matter of seconds.

Leicester City 1-3 Liverpool: Player Ratings

Unknown   at  07:10  No comments

Liverpool earned a crucial victory over Leicester City on Tuesday night courtesy of goals from Adam Lallana, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson.

SIMON MIGNOLET- 5 (out of 10)

The 26-year-old had yet another poor evening. His woeful pass should have seen Esteban Cambiasoo put Leciester ahead, and seconds later the Belgian scored an own goal – admittedly somewhat unfortunate. Overall, simply not good enough.

Vote Mignolet as your Man of the Match on Twitter:

Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring Liverpool's second goal

Steven Gerrard made the difference as Liverpool came from behind to beat 10-man Leicester 3-1.

After being rested at the weekend followed by a week of reports suggesting a rift with manager Brendan Rodgers, the Reds skipper inspired his side to victory from midfield.

Leicester took an early lead when Leonardo Ulloa’s close-range shot bounced back off the post and deflected in via Simon Mignolet, but Liverpool quickly equalised through Adam Lallana.

Gerrard slotted his team in front before Wes Morgan was shown a straight red card for bringing down Rickie Lambert as the last man, and then substitute Jordan Henderson wrapped up the points late on.

Rodgers controversial decision to rest Gerrard for the scrappy home win over Stoke on Saturday was vindicated as the former England captain inspired his team to only their third away league win of the season.

Liverpool needed his injection of energy after they fell behind because of sloppy defending, with Mignolet almost gifting Esteban Cambiasso an open goal before sending the ball into his own net from Ulloa's shot.

Lallana found the near corner from Lambert's knockdown in a familiar scene from their days together at Southampton, but Leicester were still very much in the game by the break.

Gerrard began to pull the strings in the second half however, and found Raheem Sterling in a good position on the left; the winger's shot half-cleared by Morgan before dropping into Gerrard's stride to score.

Gerrard was then involved in the move that led to Morgan's dismissal, with Lambert getting the better of the defender and clean through had he not been pulled down by his shirt by the Leicester captain.

The Reds were in firm control from then on and Henderson found an empty net when Sterling cut the ball back from the byline on 83 minutes.
