Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says the families of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster are “inspirational”.

Anfield will come together on Tuesday afternoon to remember the lives of the 96 fans who went to a football match and never came back from Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium on April 15th 1989.
A memorial service, beginning at 2.45pm will be held exactly 25 years after the fateful day.
“To see the fight from the families…” Rodgers is quoted in the Independent as saying.
“It would have been so easy for people to give up, but the relentlessness of their campaign has continued and it provides such inspiration.
“For me, I see so much of life’s values and ethics in their work and again it is not something I shy away from.
“I embrace it because it is a life’s work what they are putting in. I would look at it not so much as a manager but as a person on what I can gain from that.
“It is a huge commitment from them to make their lives a little bit better.”
Rodgers will address families, players, officials, legends and fans at the memorial service on Tuesday afternoon.
He added, “Over the time I have been here, it becomes your life.
“So, to be asked to represent the families and victims of Hillsborough and to give a reading, I am very honoured and proud to do that. Hopefully, the reading will do them justice.”

Aaron Cutler was six weeks old on April 15 1989. Here he explains what Hillsborough means to the younger generation.

I was six weeks old when the Hillsborough disaster changed the face of English football. Too young to walk or talk it would be some time before I would acknowledge its existence, never mind its significance.
That all changed aged seven. Suddenly football was my life, to the point where support teetered on obsession. I immersed myself in all things Liverpool, revising our history to the point where I could not only quote Shankly’s one liners but name his first title winning side one to eleven. The spectre of Hillsborough always loomed large but remained unclear.
A bright-eyed schoolboy was only ever likely to understand the most basic, if heartbreaking facts. 96 supporters travelled to Sheffield for an FA Cup Semi-Final. They never returned.
My adolescent ignorance was one that swept the country for 23 years. Indeed, too many turned a blind eye to the justice campaign until the findings of the HIP were released in September 2012. Only then did the nation accept what we have known for years. Only then was rightful empathy afforded the families and their struggle.
It took others far quicker to comprehend the devastation of Hillsborough and the betrayal that proceeded it. That fanatical kid was one of them. By my teens I was delving deep into the tragedy, unearthing what David Cameron would later call ‘a double injustice’ as this country betrayed Liverpool’s victims and survivors.
I researched the disaster and read streams of witness accounts, each one more harrowing than the last. I kept abreast of the campaign and its movements, all whilst wearing my red Ninety Six wristband with pride. Things were not as they seemed. Accidental Death? A 3.15 cut off? One ambulance? Questions aplenty. Questions overriding mere club loyalty.
I also came to appreciate the herculean efforts of Kenny Dalglish. Liverpool’s manager led his city through a haunting aftermath, to the eventual detriment of his own health. King Kenny was my dad’s favourite player, a genius with the ball at his feet. His qualities as a man though set him apart. A hero in every sense of the word.
Dalglish’s own book is laced with emotion as he recounts the events of that day, as too are those of Ian Rush, Alan Hansen, John Barnes – superstars scarred by a hell unfolding before their very eyes. Steve Nicol cannot bring himself to discuss the carnage to this day. Their pain and misplaced guilt are often forgotten in this a heartbreaking story.
Whenever I visit Anfield I make a point of walking past the marble shrine and find myself scanning the crowd, wondering if that pocket there numbers 96. I turn to my family and friends and for a fleeting moment think What if? I shudder.
Nobody should ever ‘go the game’ and lose their life. Perhaps the only positive to stem from April 15 1989 is the subsequent introduction of seated stadia. Every possible measure need taking to ensure safety prevails. Campaigns to reverse that decision are quite frankly bewildering.

25 years is a long time, a lifetime in my case. Imagine fighting to be heard for more than two decades. Imagine knocking on every door and perusing every possible avenue in your bid for truth only to have it slammed in your face. Imagine having your name tarnished along the way. Imagine.
Those grief-stricken families have endured that hurt and aged in the process, as if the loss of a loved one wasn’t earth shattering in itself.
A host of people should hang their heads in shame for the role they played both on that day and thereafter. Nearing the top of such a list is Kelvin McKenzie and The Sun newspaper. I have absolutely no doubt that much of the confusion engulfing Hillsborough stems from those heinous headlines reported in a tabloid now boycotted on Merseyside.
Disgusting, vulgar lies used to besmirch those mourning their dead. Retractions have since been made but mud sticks and the stigma remains. It also extends to terraces where vile chanting about the disaster tarnishes our beautiful game and exceeds what can be deemed healthy rivalry.
I have experienced similar ignorance myself. I became involved in a heated discussion with a lecturer at university no less. Hillsborough was raised in class and suddenly dismissed as the result of drunken hooliganism. Enraged I countered my tutor’s startling take on proceedings, referencing the Taylor report of 1990 which exonerated fans of all blame. Unmoved he waved away my protestations.
A clueless fool he no doubt bought the inaccuracies fed him by The Sun. So too have thousands of others as the city of Liverpool defends its reputation. That they have been forced to do so is an outrage in itself.
That said there is no place quite like Liverpool. They take care of their own and that passion, that drive, that resilience has defined this cause for 25 years. Others would have been discouraged and silenced years ago, not Merseyside.
Think back to Everton’s moving tribute in 2012; the Hollies He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother underpinning a poignant show of unity with those across Stanley Park. The Friendly Derby is a myth but that off-field bond is genuine and heart-warming. It evokes pride in both sets of supporters.
The ashen faces of Margaret Aspinal and the late Anne Williams for me provide a haunting picture to this battle -visual reminders of a painful, fraught road. Poor Anne died defending her son’s honour. How is that right?
The dignity and resolve they display(ed), along with other family members, is inspiring and a feat dwarfing the achievements of Gerrard and Suarez.
Steven Gerrard on as the fans on the Spion Kop hold up a mosaic calling for Justice for the 96 supporters who died at the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 during the FA Cup 3rd Round match against Arsenal at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)
Now 25 I have grown-up in the shadow of Hillsborough and followed the justice campaign for over a decade. I feel a part of the struggle, as do hundreds of thousands of reds supporters worldwide. For Hillsborough transcends geographical location, in fact it transcends clubs, countries and continents. It certainly transcends football. Our fight has become a wider one. This was a human disaster after all. A human disaster compounded by an unforgivable cover-up.
The younger generation must be educated accordingly. Hillsborough cannot be brushed under the carpet and erased from history, no matter how hard certain figures try. That fateful day changed the world we live in forever. Its significance cannot be lost.
Substantial headway has been made in recent times and the hope is finality will soon arrive. Talk of a title challenge abounds but the fact is closure would prove Liverpool’s greatest victory. God knows it’s been a long time coming. A lifetime in fact.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the darkest day in the history of Liverpool Football Club. The Hillsborough disaster claimed 96 innocent lives on this day in 1989.

Gone but never forgotten — Rest in Peace The 96
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the darkest day in the history of Liverpool Football Club. The Hillsborough disaster claimed 96 innocent lives on this day in 1989.
In memory of the Liverpool supporters who went to watch their beloved Reds on April 15th, 1989, but never returned. May they rest in peace and never be forgotten.

BEN TWELVES REPORTS
Jordan Lussey handed Liverpool the lead half way through the first period but Everton equalised with just five minutes from time with a goal from Ryan Ledson to prevent the Reds from securing top spot.
Liverpool remained unchanged from the team that produced an impressive 1-0 win away at Chelsea last Monday, despite speculation that Portuguese midfielder Joao Teixeira may not feature due to moving to first team duty covering for Jordan Henderson’s forthcoming suspension.
The game got off to a scrappy start on the bobbly surface at Haig Avenue, with both sides struggling to have any sustained spell of possession and create any goal scoring opportunities.
With six minutes on the clock there was a horrible collision involving goalkeeper Ryan Fulton and Everton striker Chris Long, which saw the Blues’ striker having to be replaced after an unpredictable bounce saw both players clash as they raced onto the loose ball.
After five minutes passed, the game continued and Liverpool increased the tempo forcing two corners, the latter which was only half cleared to Jordan Rossiter on the edge of the box but he fired high and wide. Kristoffer Peterson was next to try his luck moments later, after quick feet from the Swede created space for a shot which lacked power and trickled out for a goal kick.
It was a tight game and both sides struggled to find the space to open up either defence, restricting both teams to long shots predominantly. Jordan Williams tried his luck from 20 yards but his low drive was straight at Everton keeper, Taudul.
With 20 minutes gone, Liverpool produced the first meaningful attempt of the game. A strong run down the right from Connor Randall was followed by a good pass to Jack Dunn, who sent a curling effort towards the far corner but Taudul produced a good save, holding onto the ball.
After a slow start to the mini-derby, Liverpool took the lead on 25 minutes through Jordan Lussey. Joao Teixeira picked the ball up out on the left and delivered a teasing cross which saw Lussey flick the ball over the onrushing Taudul with a glancing header.
Everton then registered their first effort on goal after an excellent move which started in their own right back area produced the opportunity for Joe Williams to shoot, but his effort flew over the bar from 25 yards. A minute later, Teixeira came close to doubling Liverpool’s lead on the half hour mark but his low strike produced an excellent save from Toudal, who pushed the ball away and Everton cleared.
The home side had a good chance to draw level before the break, after a good cross from the left by George Green found substitute Courtney Duffus but he couldn’t keep his header down. Down the other end the Reds almost made it 2-0 when an excellent move from a free-kick released Brad Smith down the left and his low cross found Rossiter, but the young midfielders’ left foot curler flew narrowly wide of the near post.
In first half stoppage time, a sloppy pass from Rafa Paez handed Duffus the ball but the powerful striker fired wide of Fulton’s goal after a strong run. It proved to be the last effort of the first half which saw Liverpool head into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The second half got off to a slow start much like the first, as the poor pitch at Southport continued to make life difficult for two sides that wanted to play with the ball on the floor.
There was a rare moment of action ten minutes into the second period after Brad Smith fouled Everton’s Joe Williams and from the resulting free kick Magaye Gueye sent in a teasing free kick which flashed dangerously across the Reds’ goal with no one getting on the end of it.
Two minutes later, Everton had loud shouts for a penalty turned down by the referee after Duffus went down in the box under a challenge from Smith. The home side began to grow into the game and started to put Liverpool under pressure but the final ball deserted Alan Stubbs’ side on a number of occasions.
As the 70 minute mark approached Liverpool had a rare second half attack as Rossiter nicked the ball in the Everton half and burst forward before releasing Dunn, who’s right foot shot was blocked for a corner. Lussey took the corner which was rolled short towards the edge of the box where Rossiter was waiting, but his curling strike looped over Toudal’s far post.
With just over 15 minutes remaining, Blues boss Stubbs shuffled his pack, changing to a three at the back in an attempt to rescue something from the game, replacing wide-man Green with central defender Curtis Langton. And the tactical change almost paid off two minutes later but both Gueye and Duffus somehow failed to connect with two dangerous crosses delivered from either side just seconds after one another.
But Everton were finally rewarded for their second half persistence as they equalised with only five minutes of normal time remaining. A ball deep into the Reds’ box was met by Ryan Ledson and his header trickled over the line and into the right hand corner of Fulton’s net to draw the home side level.
The home side pushed for a dramatic late winner and Ibou Touray had a glorious chance to win it, but he fired wide on the volley and a goal wouldn’t have stood anyway as the linesman raised his flag for offside.
The Blues continued to push for an injury time winner but the Liverpool youngsters held firm to claim a point and remain at the top of the under 21 league table.
Team: Fulton: Randall, Jones, Paez, Smith, Williams, Rossitter, Teixeira, Peterson, Lussey, Dunn.
Goals: Lussey 25, Ledson 85.
