With Luis Suarez off to Barcelona, two TEAMtalk writers debate whether Liverpool can match their 2013-14 success this coming season.

In Daily Debate, two TEAMtalk writers give their views on a hot topic and then invite readers to decide who has put forward the best argument.

Can Liverpool repeat 2013-14 heroics?

Liverpool came within two points of ending their long wait for a 19th league title last season, eventually finishing second to Manchester City after dropping crucial points against Chelsea and Crystal Palace in the final four games.

There is hope on Merseyside that Brendan Rodgers can re-establish the Reds as regular Premier League title contenders, but the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona leaves a huge hole in their attack.

Rodgers is set to follow up the capture of Rickie Lambert and Emre Can with the near-£20million signing of Lazar Markovic - and there is still plenty of cash left in the kitty.

However, with their best player now gone, can Liverpool challenge quite as strongly for the title this coming season.

James Marshment and Mark Holmes have their say...

James Marshment (@marshyleeds) - Yes

There's no doubting that Suarez's departure will leave a near-impossible gap for the Reds to fill, but like Keegan, Toshack, Rush, Dalglish and Torres before him, the club, simply put, will continue to strive without their talisman.

Although there'll be raised expectations on Anfield on the back of last season's oh-so-close title challenge, Brendan Rodgers will have learnt plenty from the experience.

Rodgers has shown himself to be a proactive, rather than a reactive manager, and he'll already long have drawn up a plan for Liverpool's playing style post-Suarez.

His early captures in the transfer market have been impressive to say the least, but I think their biggest piece of business is still to arrive, with rumours of an interest in Karim Benzema or Gonzalo Higuain looking particularly exciting.

Although neither, admittedly, quite fit into the top echelon of footballer that Suarez undoubtedly now finds himself in, Benzema especially has the potential to reach that level, should he arrive at the club. After all, who expected Suarez to become as good as he has when he first arrived from Ajax in January 2011?

OK, so those new signings may be hypothetical at this stage, but Champions League football means Liverpool will once again be a major draw for some of the world's top players.

Getting the balance right between the Champions League and the Premier League will, however, represent a major challenge for Rodgers. Admittedly, they will struggle to push for glory on both those fronts, the Northern Irishman is nobody's fool and he'll know that the priority will be to retain the club's place in the top four, and who knows, perhaps making another push for that coveted 19th league title.

Mark Holmes (@Homzy) - No

With or without Suarez, it was always going to be difficult for Liverpool to improve on or even match what they achieved last season.

They have the Champions League to contend with this time around, and three of the teams that finished below them last season, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United, have already made significant improvements to their squads this summer.

Liverpool have also strengthened, of course, but while Lambert and Can will certainly improve their squad, those players can hardly be compared to Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez.

Markovic is more of a marquee signing, but it's almost impossible for a team to improve after selling their best player unless they are able to replace him with someone even better.

That isn't possible for Liverpool. No matter who they sign to fill the Suarez hole, he will pale in comparison to the Uruguayan.

The temptation will be to spend the £75million on three or four top players in the hope that they can strengthen enough in other areas to offset what they lose out on up front, but Tottenham proved last season that it's a strategy that does not always pay off. And, frankly, Rodgers' record in the transfer record does not inspire confidence the tactic would be any more successful for Liverpool.

There is no doubt that the club is moving in the right direction under Rodgers, and they are sure to excite again this coming season.

They're not going to suddenly drop out of top-four contention either but the loss of Suarez, the extra demands of the Champions League and the money being splashed by their rivals means it would take a monumental effort for Liverpool to match last season's second-placed finish.

Xherdan Shaqiri: Bayern Munich will not sell Switzerland international

Xherdan Shaqiri: Bayern Munich will not sell Switzerland international

Bayern Munich are insisting that Switzerland playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri will not be sold following an impressive World Cup campaign.

The 22-year-old has been linked with several top clubs around Europe in the wake of his performances in Brazil, which included grabbing all three goals in the 3-0 win over Honduras.

Prior to the World Cup, Shaqiri said that leaving the German champions for a Premier League club in England “was an option”.

Signed from Basle in 2012, he has started only 23 games in the Bundesliga and has rarely featured in the UEFA Champions League given the strong competition for places at the Allianz Arena.

However Matthias Sammer, Bayern’s sporting director, is adamant that the midfielder will play a big role in the club’s plans.

“Xherdan is an important player for the future,” the former Germany international told Kicker. “We are not going to sell."

Liverpool Transfer Target Analysis!

Nama : Lazar Markovic

Umur : 20 yrs Old

Posisi : Right Wing Attacker (prime)

Centre Attacking Midfielder , Second Striker ,

Centre forward (weak)

Memilki keupayaan mencipta gol melalui cross dan through ball play .

Dia memiliki keupayaan melakukan gol walaupun gol tally beliau masih belum cukup dibanggakan . Ini kerana kekerapan beliau ditukarkan posisi week in week out.

Oussama Assaidi: Impressed on loan at Stoke last season

Oussama Assaidi: Impressed on loan at Stoke last season

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is still hoping to agree a deal to sign Liverpool winger Oussama Assaidi on a permanent basis.

Assaidi enjoyed a successful spell on loan at the Britannia Stadium last season and they have been in talks with Liverpool over taking the Moroccan on a full-time basis.

However, so far they been unable to agree a fee with Liverpool for the 24-year-old and Hughes insists the situation remains deadlocked.

"We are where we are on that one," Hughes told the Stoke Sentinel. "Ideally, if we can do something, then yes we will.

"He's someone we know and someone we know can have an impact, so yes we would like to see if something can be done with Ossie.

"But obviously he isn't our player and that means the ball is in Liverpool's court."

Hughes has confirmed bringing in some new wingers is a priority after seeing Matty Etherington, Jermaine Pennant and Michael Kightly all leave the club.

"We are still looking," added Hughes. "We have strengthened defensively, in midfield and up front, so the wide areas is somewhere we have to address, with letting Matty go and not knowing about Ossie.

"It's fair to say we have to look to try to bring a bit more strength into that area."

Wilfried Bony: No offers for Swansea striker

Swansea have not yet received any offers for striker Wilfried Bony, according to Sky sources.

Bony has been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer but it is understood there has been no offer for the striker from Reds boss Brendan Rodgers - or any other club.

Swansea signed the Ivory Coast international from Vitesse Arnhem for £12million in July last year and had an impressive first season in the Premier League.

He scored 16 goals in 34 league appearances and his performances both for Swansea and the Ivory Coast in the World Cup have attracted plenty of interest from Premier League rivals and clubs abroad.

Liverpool have signed Rickie Lambert from Southampton but Rodgers wants another striker following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

The key to sustainably competing is that you don’t become reliant on individuals for your team to function, writes Si Steers.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, March 16, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson and manager Brendan Rodgers celebrate after a 3-0 victory over Manchester United during the Premiership match at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There is no glossing over the fact that losing your best player is hard to take. Whether you love or hate Luis Suarez, nobody can deny his contribution to Liverpool Football Club has been anything less than huge. It isn’t just his football ability we will miss; it is his desire to win at any cost that had an infectious influence on the team. There was also an element of surprise that Suarez gave us, an unpredictability that often meant he did things that nobody saw coming.

But the cold, hard reality of football is that you cannot rely on any one individual to achieve success. The reason that there is still plenty of reason for optimism at Anfield, despite losing Suarez, lies in the long term philosophy of FSG and Brendan Rodgers. That philosophy is the team is the star.

Replacing Suarez

Trying to replace Luis Suarez is a pointless exercise, you just can’t do it. He is unique, and trying to replace him as a player is a non-starter. But, what you can look to do is replace his output, as much as you possibly can.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, December 21, 2013: Liverpool's Luis Suarez looks dejected after missing a chance for this third goal against Cardiff City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Suarez was a maverick that gave us both goals and a wildcard. It might be that we cannot replace him like for like, but what we can do is bring in a proven goal scorer and a player that gives us an edge of unpredictability – a wildcard.

Without Suarez in the side we are going to need to tweak our game plan going into the new season, but there is no reason why it has to change dramatically. Our recruitment this summer should mean that we have far more options in the forward positions than we had last season, which will lend itself to a degree of unpredictability in how we set up. Brendan Rodger is anything but a conventional coach.

It could be that the system and different options of attacking players compensate for some of that unpredictability that Suarez gave us. Rodgers likes his players to be mobile and incisive, and if you look beyond the moments of Suarez individual genius last season it was the interchanging and fluidity of our collective attack that was the foundation for a large percentage of the goals we scored.

The foundation is still intact

Daniel Sturridge (24), Philippe Coutinho (22) and Raheem Sterling (19) are still one of the youngest, most exciting attacking trio’s in Europe. We still have the nucleus of an attack that scored over 100 goals last season. There is a big opportunity for Sturridge to build on his 21 goals last season and lay down a marker that he is world class. He has it in him, without question.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 13, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the winning third goal against Manchester City with team-mates captain Steven Gerrard and Jon Flanagan during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Philippe Coutinho now has 18 months of experience in England; he knows what it’s about, he has the ability to step up and become a massive player for us this season. It would be great to see more goals from Coutinho, but I think goals are a bonus with him; his role for me is all about pulling the strings. If he can get on the ball he will create chances, Coutinho is a playmaker – his goal scoring will improve as he matures, but his role in the team is more about creation than execution.

I fully expect Raheem Sterling to make the transition from teenage prodigy to world class footballer this season. He has the world at his feet, and he may well fill the void that Suarez left as one of our wildcards. Sterling has absolutely everything in his locker – he is strong, skilful, and has incredible speed. He also has game intelligence, and his passing and finishing continue to improve at pace. He is only 19, but I strongly believe he is ready to take on a leading role at Liverpool – his mentality and maturity for somebody so young is why he can go on to become one of the very best.

It all about goals

In this brilliant article for the Tomkins Times, Joseph Pepper looks at how goals are at the heart of John Henry’s Liverpool blueprint. He makes some great observations, and I am sure that his theory has some basis to it.

If you look at the potential in the Liverpool squad post Suarez, you could argue that in Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho there are a possible 20 more goals from those three. That means you might not have to replace 30 goals next season, if you replace 10-15, you can still realistically aim for 100 goals if the wind blows your way.

The other factor that is likely to play into our favour next season is less goals conceded; I still believe that we will sacrifice balance for probability – e.g. focus our efforts on scoring goals over conceding. But I expect to see less individual errors defensively, and I’d expect a more settled back four to contribute to a little bit more solidity.

The role of the transfer committee

When you sell the third best player in the world for £75m the natural reaction is you want a superstar to come in as a replacement. But, as we have seen with Alexis Sanchez, the recruitment of the elite players is rarely in your control, even with Champions League football and money to spend. The top clubs want the best players, so it is rarely a case of the deal being simple.

If you look back to what the team has lost with Suarez it has lost 30 goals and that element of unpredictability. So that’s essentially what the committee has to replace. The first option was Alexis Sanchez, but it could be that option two is two players instead of one.

Some of the names linked with the club like Bony or Remy might not grab the excitement of fans, and may well feel underwhelming when you compare them to Luis Suarez. But when you look at 16 goals for Bony and 14 for Remy last season you can start to see some logic behind the thought process – we need to replace 30 goals – so let’s look at those players that have proven they can score regularly in the Premier League.

Lazar Markovic is more of a wildcard signing, at 20 years old he has the potential to be great, and will provide some of the unpredictability we have lost with Suarez. Markovic is the kind of player that may well develop into a world class player in the future, and he would join Sterling and Coutinho as a player that we can build around for the next decade. Under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers the potential is enormous.

It might be that this summer we see a number of percentage signings come in, e.g. we know exactly what we are going to get. The likes of Lallana and Lambert fit that bill. And those signings will be complemented with the likes of Can and Markovic who we have earmarked as stars of the future – but are more than capable of hitting the ground running.

If an elite player becomes available that we feel we can get, I don’t doubt for one second we will look to do a deal. But I don’t expect us to buy for the sake of buying – our approach will be that we are buying the player – not the name – and that player will have to fit into a team where nobody is the star.

Why this is the right method

It is folly to say that even the best teams don’t have star players, but the key to sustainably competing is that you don’t become reliant on individuals for your team to function. And that is very much what I think Brendan Rodgers wants Liverpool to look like.

I think this season we will see a Liverpool side that retains a similar style and identity, but we will have the right players to fit into different systems.

In many ways, the sale of Luis Suarez will expose the ideas of John Henry and Brendan Rodgers. It will be a true test of whether or not last season was a freak event, or if it was the start of a philosophy that can lead to us becoming sustainable competitors.

I strongly suspect that last season was the start of that journey, it is going to be much tougher this season as our competitors have all strengthened well, but there is a very deliberate strategy being put into place at Liverpool that might not always look obvious.

In Brendan Rodgers we have a man that will get the very best out of every individual player and will make the team the star – it might not be nutmegs galore, but I am excited to see where it takes us.

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool: The Team Is The Star

Unknown   at  19:18  No comments

Adam Lallana (l) and Luke Shaw: England's future stars, according to Sky Sports pundit Alan Mullery

Adam Lallana (l) and Luke Shaw: England's future stars, according to Sky Sports pundit Alan Mullery

Former England midfielder Alan Mullery reckons the rush for success in club football is holding back the national team.

Mullery is concerned clubs in England are more concerned in recruiting big money signings than nurturing talent through the ranks.

The Sky Sports pundit believes standards are slipping as a result, with other nations suffering a similar fate with clubs looking for quick results.

Mullery came through the ranks at Fulham with World Cup winner George Cohen and was part of the England squad that reached the quarter-finals of the competition in 1970, but he has concerns that no young English players have come to prominence since Wayne Rooney broke into the Everton side in 2002 as a teenager.

“If you’ve got good players you’ll have a good team,” Mullery said. “If you’ve got average players you’ll have an average team. And if you’ve got poor players then you go out just like Brazil did, to be fair, because their players, other than two decent players they had, were pretty poor.

“And you saw it, they were absolutely rung to bits by Germany, which was absolutely fantastic to watch but very hurtful as far as the Brazilian players were concerned.

“But when you look at it we’ve got to start doing things that we haven’t done for years. The biggest problem we’ve got, and it is no disrespect at all to anybody, but we have so many foreign players in this country now that our younger people don’t get the opportunity to come through as early as I did, as early as George Cohen did playing for Fulham, in the team by the time you’re 17. Wayne Rooney, the only one recently over the last sort of 10 years to get into somebody’s team at 17 years of age.

“We don’t see that anymore. And yet many, many years ago it happened regularly. Where now, you know they’re quite happy, the people in the Premier League to go out and buy players that are already renowned to play and they’ll spent £30-£40 million on a player that’s coming through but not necessarily English.”

And Mullery insists the quick fix extends to managers as well, citing the experience of David Moyes at Manchester United.

Moyes was sacked eight months after filling the post vacated by Sir Alex Ferguson after 27 years at Old Trafford, and he will be succeeded by Netherlands coach Louis Van Gaal, whose team finished third in the World Cup.

Mullery said: “You’ve got to have instant success in the Premier League. Look at poor David Moyes last season. Alex was there for 25 years winning everything in sight. David went in there and it was a nightmare for him to go through it. So, if you don’t do the job you’re out and you’re on your way.

“I think Van Gaal is a very, very good idea to bring him to the football club because he’s a renowned coach the way he is. David Moyes was an excellent coach but it still never worked for him. So what you’re looking for is immediate success and if you don’t get that you’re out the door.”

Despite England’s early exit from the World Cup, Mullery believes there are some positives for manager Roy Hodgson, such as the emergence of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, who played in the final Group D match against Costa Rica.

Mullery added: “I think you can look at Luke Shaw, it was great example to let him play in the last game and he now knows what a World Cup is about. He could play in two more World Cups. He’s a 19-year-old boy, he looks a very good player. Lallana as well, Adam Lallana, he’s a very good player.

“But there are only two or three. We haven’t got an influx like the Germans, who had eight in the World Cup coming from four years ago. We haven’t got that type of player to come through.”

~Wilfried Bony~

Robbie Fowler,Steve McManaman,Michael Owen,Graeme Souness,Ian Rush,Raul Meireles...

5.Pemburuan Lazar Markovic masih berterusan.

8.Aspek bisnes/nilai pemain.

“As this football club has always said, the most important people are the people who are at Liverpool Football Club and that is the way it will always be.There is no one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.” - Kenny &039;The King&039; Dalglish

Robbie Fowler,Steve McManaman,Michael Owen,Graeme Souness,Ian Rush,Raul Meireles...

5.Pemburuan Lazar Markovic masih berterusan.
