Steven Gerrard is rested for today’s visit of Stoke City at Anfield, with Lucas Leiva keeping his place in midfield.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, August 25, 2014: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard looks dejected during the Premier League match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by Chris Brunskill/Propaganda)

Kolo Toure also retains his place, while Glen Johnson switches to right-back and Jose Enrique comes in at left-back.

The last time Johnson and Enrique lined up as The Reds’ full backs was QPR away, a match that is actually Liverpool’s last win, despite their abysmal defensive display on the day.

Philippe Coutinho comes into attack, supporting Rickie Lambert and Raheem Sterling.

With no Fabio Borini on the bench, Liverpool don’t have a forward among their subs.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Toure, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Lambert

Subs: Jones, Lovren, Moreno, Lallana, Gerrard, Markovic, Can.

Today marks 16 years to the day since Steven Gerrard‘s debut.

Liverpool’s search for a new goalkeeper has seen them head to Italy, scouting Genoa’s Mattia Perin and Fiorentina’s Neto.

Exclusive by Fabrizio Romano

The Reds have been linked with Fiorentina’s 25-year-old Brazilian Neto (full name Norberto Murara Neto) in recent months but are also keeping tabs on Genoa’s 22-year-old Perin (pictured above).

Perin recently made his debut for the Italian national team in the last international break, as a substitute against Albania. He has been – predictably – likened to compatriot Gianluigi Buffon.

Liverpool have scouted Perin on at least two occasions this season and would cost in the region of €12 – 15 million. He was previously linked with AC Milan before they signed Diego Lopez in the summer.

Perin has a spectacular style, with the cliched “cat-like reflexes”. He’s comfortable in possession, not his best strength but certainly not below the standard of a normal goalkeeper today.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have had talks with Neto’s agent. The Brazilian stopper’s contract at Fiorentina expires in 2015 and he is in talks to sign a new one, but Liverpool and Roma are both watching the situation.

Liverpool, having attempted to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in recent months, are keen to sign a goalkeeper in January to at least add strength in depth in the position.

Current first choice Simon Mignolet‘s position continues to be in question due to recent form and high profile mistakes. The Belgian joined the club for £10 million from Sunderland in 2013.

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva admits this season has been tougher for him than his difficult introduction to England eight years ago, but he insists he can still do a job for the club.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, November 4, 2014: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva during a training session at Melwood Training Grounds ahead of the UEFA Champions League Group B match against PFC Ludogorets Razgrad. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)s

The Brazil international lost his place in the side once captain Steven Gerrard was turned into a holding playmaker by manager Brendan Rodgers, and a lack of opportunities has raised the prospect of the 27-year-old leaving.

However, he was handed a lifeline against Ludogorets on Wednesday – his second successive Champions League start after playing against Real Madrid – when Gerrard was pushed into a more advanced role as Rodgers looked to shore up the middle of the park.

Lucas is adamant he will fight to prove he has a future at the club, despite enduring a spell worse than when he was the fans' whipping boy under Rafael Benitez in 2006 and 2007.

"It has been very hard. Apart from my first two seasons at Liverpool, I have probably played most of the time," the Brazilian said.

"The day I am happy I am not playing, something is wrong, and probably I would have to change things around.

"The first two seasons I really didn't expect to play many games because I was only young, but I am 27 now and probably my best years are still to come. And of course I want to play.

"I am not the type of person to get my money every month and chill. It is not me and it has never been me.

"I am not happy – I wasn't happy – but when I play you feel better and you feel you can help the team more. I had to be patient.

"My Liverpool career is going to be like that forever until my last day here, but I just gave my all to the team, to the players and I think that is why I am still here.

"This is my eighth season, with more than 250 games, and it means a lot."

(Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Lucas is not the type of person to agitate for a move and, while he knows he needs regular football, he is not prepared to give up on the Reds just yet.

"Sometimes things don't work the way you want, but I think my career has been like that at Liverpool and I will just keep going until my last day here," he added.

"That is the way I am and that is the way I have to be. I tried (against Ludogorets) to show again my commitment will always be there.

"If I didn't think I had a role to play, I wouldn't have had the chance to play (on Wednesday), especially in a difficult moment.

"The manager maybe thought he should play players that he really thinks can be committed to the cause, and I am."

Should Rodgers persist with Gerrard in the number 10 role, where he enjoyed so much success in the past, it opens the door for a longer-term return for Lucas.

He admits he needs a run of games to get himself back up to the levels he feels he should be at after a stop-start 18 months, but is taking nothing for granted as he knows the manager could switch tactics again to face Stoke at home on Saturday.

"Football is a funny sport and can change a lot, but I will give my all to my last day here," he said.

"I just have to try to take my chances – like the Real Madrid game – and, although it (Ludogorets) wasn't a brilliant performance in terms of possession of the ball, I helped the team defending.

"We have a lot of games and we don't know how the manager will manage the team and the squad.

"I am quite fresh because I haven't played, but it is always hard when you don't play many games because you don't have the rhythm and fitness you expect.

"But I think I showed I have the desire and when I put on the Liverpool shirt I give my all, and that is sometimes what fans want."

I’ll fight for Liverpool future — Lucas Leiva

Simon Mignolet faces a fight to keep his first-team place for Liverpool after high-profile errors, writes Jack Lusby.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in action against Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Following Simon Mignolet’s miserable error two minutes in to Liverpool’s 2-2 draw away to PFC Ludogorets Razgrad on Wednesday night, Brendan Rodgers offered the goalkeeper equal measures of criticism and assurance.

Dani Abalo capitalised on Mignolet’s spill to put the Bulgarian side ahead in the Champions League, and the goalkeeper looked a player bereft of confidence once more.

Rodgers told reporters that “The goal was a massive setback for the team but we need to keep his confidence as high as we can. We have to look to the weekend and keep a clean sheet.”

“As a goalkeeper you have to be able to let these things go.”

With Liverpool hosting Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, however, Mignolet may struggle having looked far from his best in the Premier League throughout the season so far.

Rodgers’ comments give the goalkeeper short-term assurance, but perhaps if performances don’t go Mignolet’s way this festive period, Liverpool may be looking to upgrade on a crucial area in the January transfer window.

Potential?

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, August 17, 2013: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet celebrates with team-mates after saving a late Stoke City penalty during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Mignolet announced himself in style in a Liverpool against Stoke in last season’s corresponding fixture, with a late penalty save ensuring the Reds kicked off their campaign with all three points.

After that game, Simon Mullock of the Daily Mirror wrote that “if the Belgian international was daunted by the prospect of replacing Kop favourite Pepe Reina, he can breathe a bit easier now.”

Mullock also quoted the goalkeeper as claiming “I’m a popular man? Let’s keep it that way.”

Unfortunately for Mignolet, this status has not endured, and with Rodgers’ words on Thursday this underlines not only a failure to develop since his £9 million move last summer, but perhaps even a depreciation in quality from the No. 22.

Based on his form for Sunderland prior to moving to Merseyside, Mignolet’s strengths were his shot stopping, with the goalkeeper always more capable with his hands than his feet.

However, errors such as his spill against Ludogorets in midweek underline how a major drop in confidence has seen this area suffer, too.

Former Reds goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar recently criticised Mignolet for his performances in an interview with BBC Sport.

Grobbelaar claims: “I’ve likened Mignolet to worse than Dracula because at least Dracula comes out of his coffin now and then. He seems to stay on his line and that’s it. That whole area, not just the six-yard area, is the goalkeeper’s.”

While the 57-year-old is rather ill-judged in his literary comparisons, Grobbelaar makes a fair analysis of Mignolet’s deficiencies in goal for Liverpool.

With this in mind and with no evidence of improvement so far, it is unlikely that Mignolet will develop into a top goalkeeper at Liverpool.

Competition

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, October 28, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Brad Jones in action against Swansea City during the Football League Cup 4th Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

One key factor behind Mignolet’s poor form could be that the goalkeeper has little to no competition so far in the Liverpool ranks.

Grobbelaar suggested Liverpool’s current back-up goalkeeper should take the reins in Mignolet’s stead, claiming he “would give Brad Jones a chance to see if he can come to the party and put Mignolet on the bench.”

However, in reality, Jones has never been a Premier League quality goalkeeper and, while Mignolet is in terrible form for the Reds, the former Middlesborough man would not solve Rodgers’ problems.

In almost 15 years in professional football, Jones has made just over 100 league appearances, spanning spells with such high-calibre forces as Stockport County, Rotherham United, Blackpool and Derby County.

This includes eight Premier League appearances for the Reds.

A hugely likeable figure on Merseyside, Jones is a lifelong Liverpool supporter, and on signing a new contract at the end of 2012, maintained that “there were two things I said when I was eight years old; one was that I was going to play for Australia, which I have, and the other was playing for Liverpool, which I’ve done too.”

Rodgers also spoke on this renewal that Jones has “stepped up to the plate and shown he is a very capable No. 2.”

However, while Jones can offer passion and loyalty—two reasons why he is so suitable to a back-up role—his quality in goal is not up the standard of a Premier League regular, and as such cannot confidently challenge Mignolet, or provide the goalkeeper with motivation to perform.

If Mignolet is guaranteed a starting role whatever the circumstance, how can Rodgers ensure his performances improve?

Rodgers’ Last Stand

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, March 30, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers celebrates his side's 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)Brendan Rodgers celebrates his side’s 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers’ quotes, that his error at Ludogorets was a “massive setback for the team,” suggest that, while also offering support in declaring “we need to keep his confidence as high as we can,” the manager is unhappy with his goalkeeper’s performances.

Mignolet’s lack of confidence between the sticks is hampering any progress made in the defence, with Kolo Toure standing as the only authoritative presence within the Liverpool ranks.

Rodgers needs a confident, on-form goalkeeper in order for his side to shut up shop as winter draws in.

His press conference claim that “it won’t always go your way, so you fight harder,” could well be a veiled nudge in the back for the No. 22.

The manager’s criticism stand as a last-ditch motivational tactic—without competition or any natural development in Mignolet so far, this is all Rodgers can use prior to the January transfer window.

Grobbelaar continued his criticism by concluding that for Liverpool to succeed they “have got to shore up the back. Get yourself someone in goal who can actually only let in 30 goals a season, or fewer than 30 goals.”

Mignolet has so far failed to suggest he is that goalkeeper.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Rodgers has proffered that “Simon is strong enough to deal with criticism,” and the goalkeeper himself recently suggested he was his own “biggest critic” underlines this.

However, Mignolet needs to back up this mentality with his performances.

With Petr Cech and Victor Valdes linked with a move to Anfield so far this season, and Brendan Rodgers’ criticism perhaps a final shot at spurring his current charge into life, Liverpool may have to upgrade on Simon Mignolet to help relieve their defensive issues.

Can Simon Mignolet find form at Liverpool, or should Brendan Rodgers sign a replacement in January? Let us know in the comments below.

Competition

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool should not let Steven Gerrard‘s career at the club fade away, amid criticism of the Reds skipper.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, former defender Carragher says Gerrard would still be “one of the first names I’d put down on the teamsheet” in a big game and not for sentimental reasons.

Gerrard has come under increased pressure during Liverpool’s poor start to the season, with Carragher himself bemoaning the lack of leadership on Sky Sports last week.

“If Liverpool had a penalty or a free-kick in a dangerous area, Steven is the only person I’d want taking it,” wrote Carragher. “He’s proven that against Ludogorets and Everton this season. He is also the man I’d pick to play a killer pass and the one I’d back over anyone else if he was racing through on goal.

“The issue, however, is that at 34, he doesn’t get into those positions as regularly as he once did. Furthermore, the dynamic of the deep-lying role he occupied last season has changed as Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have not been around to provide outlets.”

Carragher believes Liverpool should now focus on Gerrard’s strengths in short bursts, rather than burning him out with three games per week.

“Over the next 18 months, Brendan will have to start to take him off and leave him out for his own good,” he added. “People have questioned whether the manager has the resolve to do so but history shows he makes big calls. Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Pepe Reina and I will testify to that.

“But that isn’t a bad thing for Steven. Can you imagine the reaction inside Anfield with 30 minutes of a tight game remaining and seeing No 8 getting stripped for action? With space to exploit and energy to change the game, he could be a lethal weapon.”

Liverpool will be looking to build on Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Ludogorets in the Champions League when they face Stoke City at Anfield on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool play their third match in a week on Saturday when they host Stoke City at Anfield – a game in which the manager will need to introduce some fresh legs to his side. Ben Twelves takes a look at the potential selection options available.

Liverpool return to action at Anfield having successfully avoiding a fifth straight defeat to claim a draw in Bulgaria on Wednesday night – a result that keeps Champions League qualification in The Reds’ own hands for a huge final shoot-out game against Basel in two weeks’ time.

Before that win-or-bust fixture however, Rodgers’ side have the small matter of trying to rectify their woeful form in the Premier League so far this season, with three winnable matches beginning with Stoke at the weekend, and with Liverpool now trailing the fourth place by five points as a gap begins to open up, it really is a crunch week ahead for the domestic campaign.

The Reds reached their lowest point in the dreadful defeat against Crystal Palace last Sunday, but an improved performance in midweek has given the team something to build on ahead of the clash against Mark Hughes’ illness-stricken side, who will be looking to bounce back from a miserable 2-1 home defeat to Burnley last Saturday.

With the game against The Potters being the third in a week for Liverpool, Rodgers will have to once again make changes to his team and the Reds boss must be brave and make the key decisions for Saturday’s line up to put an end to the detrimental effect that some of his team selections have had on performances and results this season.

The Team

Rodgers opted for a more compact and workman like side in Bulgaria on Wednesday but with Liverpool needing to operate on the front foot in the next three games in order to get results, the manager has to make positive changes to his side.

Simon Mignolet’s position in the Liverpool goal comes under increasing scrutiny following another error and poor all round performance, but with Brad Jones as the alternative, it really is about finding the lesser of two evils.

Dejan Lovren’s long overdue removal from the team finally happened, and while his replacement Kolo Toure was involved in a catalogue of errors leading up to the first goal conceded in midweek, he should keep his place in the back four with Mamadou Sakho unlikely to feature, but this time it could be the turn of Martin Skrtel to make way with the Slovakian’s form becoming an increasing concern.

Glen Johnson produced another uninspiring performance at left back, and Alberto Moreno, who for reasons unknown didn’t reclaim his place in the side in Sofia, must return to the starting team on Saturday. With Rodgers’ persistence with the England full-back, it could be that Javi Manquillo drops to the bench to accommodate his fellow Spaniard.

In midfield, despite struggling in a two man centre in the 2-2 draw, Lucas Leiva should retain his place as should goal scorer Jordan Henderson, but Joe Allen’s flurry of involvement could result in Emre Can returning to the starting team with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana also options to come in.

The snail-paced Liverpool attack on Wednesday night cannot afford to remain for Saturday’s fixture and with Coutinho, Lallana and Fabio Borini all ready and waiting, there is absolutely no excuse for Rodgers not to drop the captain and provide more mobility and pace around Rickie Lambert who deserves to keep his shirt having notched two goals in four days.

The Line Up

There is a number of selection options available to Rodgers and the Liverpool manager cannot afford to ignore the big decisions this time around. That means Gerrard must make way to the bench to allow for a pacey attacking midfield to be deployed to help Liverpool’s number nine.

This is how Rodgers’ side should therefore look come Saturday 3pm:

stoke diamond 1

Another option for Rodgers would be to play a 4-3-3 system and have his side lining up something like this:

stoke 4-3-3

However, I expect Rodgers to once again stick with an intended 4-2-3-1 shape, which was turned more into a 4-4-1-1 on Wednesday night, with The Reds looking like this:

rodgers stoke 4-2-3-1

It was far from an impressive display on Wednesday night in the Bulgarian capital, but it was a performance that can be and must be built upon if Rodgers and his players want to transform their fortunes in the Premier League.

It won’t be an easy fixture against a physical but tricky Stoke side though, and Liverpool will have to improve another level again if they want to come out of the game with maximum points ahead of two more tough but winnable fixtures.
