Jordan Henderson: Liverpool midfielder in action against Manchester City

Jordan Henderson: Liverpool midfielder in action against Manchester City

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is relishing the prospect of playing in the same team as Mario Balotelli following the striker’s arrival at Anfield.

The 24-year-old’s £16m transfer from AC Milan was completed on Monday and he could make his debut against Tottenham at White Hart Lane next weekend.

Balotelli watched his new team lose 3-1 against one of his former clubs, Manchester City, last night, and he appeared in the away dressing room to greet his new team-mates before the match.

"I think everybody is looking forward to working with him,” Henderson said.

"He is a very talented player and a very big player coming into the club. Hopefully he can give us a big lift and play some part in the next game.

"He was in the dressing room wishing everyone luck. It was good to see him. Hopefully he can get a good week's training under his belt and be ready for Sunday."

Liverpool started well against City and had the better of the first half until defensive errors allowed Stevan Jovetic to smash the home side into the lead just before the break.

City then took complete control after the break with Jovetic adding a fine second and Sergio Aguero coming off the bench for a superb third.

Substitute Rickie Lambert forced in an 83rd-minute consolation off Pablo Zabaleta, but City had firmly underlined their superiority by that point.

Henderson reckons Liverpool were unfortunate not to get more from the match, though, but he believes the team can bounce back at Tottenham.

The 24-year-old said: "Before they scored I felt we were in control of the game, especially dominating possession of the ball, so going in 1-0 at half-time was hard to take.

"Unfortunately they scored a couple more - it deflated us, but we kept going, kept fighting. You saw that with Rickie's goal, and then he had another chance. It could have been a different story.

"We will keep going. We had chances. We are always going to create chances with the players we have got.

"We have just got to work in training on the things we need to work on and look forward to the next game."

Transfer rumours continue to emerge at a rapid rate, with less than a week until the summer window closes. Henry Jackson takes a look at which players have made the headlines in recent days, with several stars reportedly set to leave Liverpool.

FABIO BORINI

It has become clear that Brendan Rodgers does not see Borini as part of his future plans, and the Express reports that the 23-year-old Italian could be set for a move to AC Milan before the end of the transfer window.

Fernando Torres appears to be at the top of the Rossoneri‘s wish-list, but should a deal for the former Reds striker fail to materialise, Borini is seen as a potential replacement.

The signing of Mario Balotelli has put the former Roma forward even further down the Anfield pecking order, and his first-team opportunities would be limited to say the least if he were to stay this season.

DANIEL AGGER

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, January 1, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Agger celebrates scoring the first goal against Hull City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Agger’s future at Liverpool has been up in the air all summer, and the 29-year-old admits he is unsure whether he will still be a Reds player come 2nd September.

In an interview with Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, the Denmark captain had the following to say about his current situation:

“The future is complicated. There are a few things that has to be sorted and we have to take it from there. I actually don’t know what will happen. It is a bit up to Liverpool.

“I have had niggling injuries at the wrong times and I have to say that it is difficult to change the team when it is winning. I am not frustrated by that. I am frustrated the way it happened and the way it was handled.”

The purchase of Dejan Lovren, coupled with Rodgers’ preference of both Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho over Agger means he will have to accept sitting on the substitutes’ bench for much of this season. At 29, and an international skipper, it seems unlikely he will be willing to do that.

JACK ROBINSON

Robinson is another who looks as if he’s heading for the Anfield exit door, with the Daily Mail claiming the 20-year-old could set for a permanent move to QPR.

The £1m rated youngster is seen as a good option to bring in at left-back by Rs manager Harry Redknapp, and with new signing Alberto Moreno, Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan all ahead of Robinson in terms of importance at Liverpool, it is a move that would surely suit both parties.

Robinson has made a total of 11 first-team appearances for Liverpool since his debut in 2010. At the time, he became the youngest player ever to represent the club, at 16 years and 250 days.

LUCAS LEIVA

The Daily Mirror reports that the Brazilian has edged closer to a move to Napoli, after he was left out of Liverpool’s squad to face Manchester City on Monday night.

The 27-year-old is not the player he was once was, with injuries stunting his progress and first-team opportunities becoming more and more limited over the last 12 months or so. His display on the opening weekend against Southampton epitomised his fall from grace, and perhaps made Rodgers realise he was no longer part of his plans.

Formers Reds manager Rafa Benitez is reportedly keen to pay £1.5m in order to take Lucas to the Italian club, and if he did go it would bring an end to seven years of very fine service to Liverpool Football Club.

POST MATCH VERDICT

Manchester City FC v Liverpool MCILIV (3-1)

Etihad

Liverpool Lack Of Team Play Against Super Quality Man City

1. Permulaan

2. First Half.

Banyak kali kita lihat pertahanan seperti Ivanovic melakukan in the line clearance.

4. City the best team of the night

5. Finishing Lemah dan Track back + closing down berterabur

Saya selalu tekankan , jarang pemain baru terus berjaya bermain baik jika terus disumbat dalam first eleven. Sebab itu saya kagum dengan Manquillo. Mereka perlu dsimpan untuk read the game.

Kesimpulan

Second half yaang teruk . Can memang saya dah tengok. Defensive department masih menjadi isu besar.

Time for us to Move Forward ,

Arsene Wenger: Saw Arsenal concede more in 'big' games

Arsenal's porous streak on their travels, Liverpool's away record & another unwanted Man Utd record feature in our look at the weekend's stats.

We take a look at the most interesting Opta statistics after a weekend which saw Chelsea, Tottenham and Swansea maintain their perfect starts to the season before Manchester City joined them by beating Liverpool on Monday evening.

Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

Six of Aston Villa's last nine Barclays Premier League matches have been 0-0 at half-time.

Aston Villa have been involved in 92 goalless draws in the Barclays Premier League, 14 more than any other team.

Including both home and away matches, only Everton v Liverpool (20) and Liverpool v Manchester United (15) have produced more red cards in the Barclays Premier League than Aston Villa v Newcastle United (13).

Aston Villa have won only nine of their last 32 Barclays Premier League home matches.

Newcastle drew one Barclays Premier League away match last season.

(rujuk Gambar)

*its all about timing. Game ini terlalu awal buat Liverpool. Untunglah City dapat lawan awal.

There was much to debate and discuss following Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Man City on Monday evening, with teething problems apparent in the early stages of Brendan Rodgers‘ new look side.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, August 25, 2014: Liverpool's xxxx in action against Manchester City during the Premier League match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by Chris Brunskill/Propaganda)

Lovren and Skrtel partnership will take some time

For the first goal, new signing Dejan Lovren is initially far too close to his partner, Martin Skrtel, and not having moved across to his left-back Alberto Moreno. As noted by Gilbert Anderson on his blog:

The space left between Moreno and Lovren is enormous and gives Silva the opportunity to dart into the box. Lovren is far too close to Skrtel and Johnson. Gerrard could have arguably done a better tracking job of Silva, though if Lovren was positioned say five yards further to his left then it would have been an easy clearance and the duel with Silva avoided. Why three of the back four are so far across the field is beyond me.

Coutinho needs to play in the middle

The Brazilian struggled again from the wide left role, misplacing passes and struggling to be the creative brains of the team that Brendan Rodgers wants him to be.

Admittedly he won’t always have such defensive duties in the role, but Coutinho looks far more at home in a central role; either as one of the three in a midfield trio or diamond, or at the point of a midfield diamond as the attacking impetus of the side.

2 up front is the way forward

After switching to a midfield diamond and two up front in order to win last week’s opener against Southampton, The Reds got their consolation goal on Monday after making the same change.

Rickie Lambert’s presence seemingly allows Daniel Sturridge more space to prosper and occupy the opponent’s defence. It also means more protection from the narrow midfielders alongside Steven Gerrard.

With Mario Balotelli’s arrival, partnering him alongside Sturridge seems most likely.

Defensive midfielder needed?

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, August 25, 2014: Liverpool's Steven Gerrard looks dejected during the Premier League match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by Chris Brunskill/Propaganda)

While Steven Gerrard adds much from his range of passing and set-piece delivery, his duties ahead of his centre-back pairing, especially up against a talented and mobile midfield runners such as David Silva and Samir Nasri, are exposed. As noted by Sami Faizullah of OOTB:

“On the ball, the retired England captain is still excellent; his long balls particularly, from deep in midfield a familiar sight in last season’s title challenging side. But off-the-ball, Gerrard is virtually non existent; his positional sense and defensive movement are worryingly weak, while his general defensive intelligence is always questionable.”

Liverpool have squad depth

To end on a positive, Liverpool finally have some squad depth. Even without new signing Mario Balotelli and injured quartet Adam Lallana, Jon Flanagan, Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini, Rodgers had a bench consisting of £20m winger Lazar Markovic – who certainly injected pace and purpose after his arrival – £18m centre-back Mamadou Sakho, plus new signings Rickie Lambert, Emre Can and Javier Manquillo.

A disappointing evening saw Liverpool beaten by Premier League champions Manchester City, and Henry Jackson assesses each Reds player on the night.

SIMON MIGNOLET- 6 (out of 10)

The 26-year-old was rarely troubled, and despite conceding three goals he hardly had any other shots to deal with. He was at fault for Sergio Aguero’s goal, having got himself into a bad position and easily beaten at his near post subsequently.

GLEN JOHNSON- 5

Johnson was deployed at right-back, but yet again there appeared to be a lack of focus about the 30-year-old. He was ponderous in possession and weak defensively, and a late injury could rule him out of action for a few weeks.

MARTIN SKRTEL- 6

On a night when Liverpool’s defensive flaws were certainly highlighted, Skrtel was the Reds’ better defender. He read the game well and was strong in the air, but his partnership with Dejan Lovren certainly needs time to get right – especially their defensive line.

DEJAN LOVREN- 5

After an impressive debut against Southampton, Lovren had a poor night at the office against the champions. He was at fault positionally for the first goal, and his lapse in concentration allowed Aguero to get in behind him and score City’s third. A disappointing night.

ALBERTO MORENO- 6

There were plenty of very promising signs on Moreno’s debut, but he ultimately played a big part in the defeat.

Going forward he looked excellent, with a good touch and electrifying pace at his disposal, but with the Reds dominating the game it was his defensive error that allowed Stevan Jovetic to make it 1-0 at a critical time.

Hopefully his injury isn’t too bad and he’s able to settle in the side.

STEVEN GERRARD- 6

Gerrard oozed his usual class on the ball, but there are still question marks about his defensive expertise off the ball.

He lost David Silva too easily in the lead-up to the first goal, and his lack of legs were an issue at times.

JOE ALLEN- 7

The Welshman deservedly came into the side in place of Lucas Leiva, and he was probably Liverpool’s standout player on the night.

He used the ball well, covered plenty of ground and got forward a number of times to support the attack. Another promising display by the much-maligned 24-year-old.

JORDAN HENDERSON- 6

This wasn’t the most effective 90 minutes Henderson will ever play, but he never stopped running and always looked confident in possession.

The 24-year-old could, perhaps, have taken a few more risks on the ball though, rather than invariably opting for the easy pass.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 5

The Brazilian was extremely disappointing all evening, and after such a magnificent pre-season he has struggled in his opening two league matches.

Too often he tried to be too fancy in dangerous areas, and he just failed to stamp any kind of authority on the game – struggling from a wide position. Substituted in the second-half, he perhaps needs to be moved into a more central role.

RAHEEM STERLING- 7

The 19-year-old looked easily Liverpool’s biggest attacking threat all evening, showing blistering pace, quick feet and good vision throughout.

He has reached the stage where it’s a surprise if he’s not among Liverpool’s top three performers every game.

DANIEL STURRIDGE- 6

Sturridge was a little disappointing, and although he kept trying, he was erratic in front of goal and guilty of not holding the ball up enough. He did set up Pablo Zabaleta’s consolation own goal, however.

The signing of Mario Balotelli may see him paired in a front two, and thus give Sturridge more space to prosper – as shown by his assist for Lambert’s goal / Zabaleta’s own-goal, and last week after Lambert’s introduction against Southampton.

Substitutes

LAZAR MARKOVIC (on for Coutinho 60)- 7

The 20-year-old impressed on his Reds competitive debut, bringing pace and creativity to the side lacking in the disappointing Coutinho.

EMRE CAN (on for Allen 74)- 6

The German showed some nice touches and a good work ethic, but was booked almost straight away for a rash challenge.

RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Sterling 79)- 6

The 32-year-old played a key part in Liverpool’s goal, but perhaps should have scored the initial header that led to Zabaleta turning the ball into his own net. He had a chance to make it 3-2 soon after, but opted to try to play in Sturridge instead.
