Manchester United topped the injury table with 39 throughout the campaign

Manchester United topped the injury table with 39 throughout the campaign

Manchester United suffered the most injuries of any Premier League side last season, a study has revealed.

Louis van Gaal's side had a total of 39 players sidelined throughout the campaign, but the club still managed a top four finish in the Premier League.

United suffered most of their injuries in the first third of the season as Van Gaal struggled to adapt to the English top flight in his first season in charge, but last-day survivors Newcastle lost the most days through injury with a staggering 1,871, a total 405 days higher than second-place Arsenal.

The data, compiled by physioroom.com, has Everton in third place behind Arsenal with 1,423 days, and Manchester United in fourth, parallel to their Premier League finish, with 1,348.

Chelsea topped the Premier League table from matchday one to 38, and unsurprisingly sit bottom of the injury table with just 428 days out. Tottenham (475) and Leicester (540) make up the bottom three.

Spurs also lost the fewest days to muscle injuries with just 86, compared to Newcastle's 1,003.

Everton and Newcastle came second to Manchester United with number of injuries (37), ahead of Arsenal (35), QPR and West Ham (31).

Burnley had the least number of injuries with 16, but they could not avoid relegation come May.

Hamstring injuries again dominated the ‘type of injury’ table – accounting for more than 62 per cent of all muscular problems, and Hull's Robert Snodgrass holds the unwanted title of having the most days out with 281, followed by QPR's Alejandro Faurlin (270) and Stoke's Peter Odemwingie (238).

The cold of November also had an impact on the month of injuries, with 70 reported, followed by 69 in January.

The injury table

Newcastle 1,871 days (37 total injuries)

Nathaniel Clyne: Was subject of bid from Liverpool

Nathaniel Clyne: Was subject of bid from Liverpool

Southampton are interested in Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and are yet to receive new Nathaniel Clyne or Morgan Schneiderlin offers.

Ronald Koeman wants to sign a new goalkeeper to cover for Fraser Forster, who will miss the first half of the season with a serious knee injury, and Stekelenburg is among his chief targets, according to the Daily Echo.

The 32-year-old spent last season on loan and Monaco but made only seven appearances and will not be joining the French club on a permanent basis.

Fulham are apparently keen to keep him off the wage bill, however, ahead of another season in the Championship, and the Netherlands international could now make another temporary switch, this time with Southampton.

Saints, meanwhile, are yet to hear back from Liverpool after rejecting an opening offer of £10million for Clyne, while no club has followed up their interest in Schneiderlin with a firm approach, the newspaper adds.

Mauro Icardi: Signed up

Mauro Icardi: Signed up

Reported Premier League target Mauro Icardi has put an end to speculation over his immediate future by signing a one-year contract extension at Inter Milan.

Icardi, whose new deal will keep him at the club until June 2019, finished as the joint-top scorer in Serie A alongside Hellas Verona's Luca Toni, with both men notching 22 goals.

The Argentina striker has been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United but the 22-year-old will not be leaving Inter any time soon.

"I didn't expect to do so well this season, so I'm delighted," Icardi said on his club's official website. "I take each game as it comes and train hard so that I can give my best.

"The team has helped me to score goals and that's why I've achieved this."

Icardi joined Inter in the summer of 2013 from Sampdoria and scored nine goals in his first season.

Inter finished eighth in Serie A and failed to qualify for European football for the 2015-16 campaign.

Icardi, who struck twice in a 4-3 win over Empoli in Sunday's season finale, is optimistic better times are ahead for the club.

"I'm very happy that we finished the season on a high at the San Siro," Icardi said. "We will start next season with the memory of a win and that's a great way to kick things off.

"I'm sure that with the boss (Roberto Mancini) we'll succeed - we've been working well for a good five or six months now and we'll get better in pre-season."

Martin Skrtel: Unhappy with Liverpool contract offer

Martin Skrtel: Unhappy with Liverpool contract offer

Martin Skrtel has described the contract offered to him by Liverpool as "unacceptable" and more suited to an older player with health problems.

Skrtel is just over a year remaining on his current contract at Anfield and has turned down Liverpool's first offer of an extension, hinting he is open to the idea of moving on this summer.

"It's unacceptable for me," Skrtel said regarding the Reds' offer in an interview with Slovakian website Akualne.

"I think that contracts like this are offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.

"The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens."

Skrtel also discussed Liverpool's failure to maintain their place in the top four of the Premier League.

"We failed because we did not meet the targets we have set," added the defender. "If we finish in fifth or sixth, it does not matter, we would still not have qualified for the Champions League.

"The significant factor was the exit of Luis Suarez [to Barcelona last summer] and too many errors on the field. The squad was big enough.

"New players arrived and it is not always easy to acclimatize with the new club, so the first half of the season was difficult. The second part has been improved, but the conclusion was we did not reach our targets."

Geoffrey Kondogbia: A target for Arsenal and Manchester City

Geoffrey Kondogbia: A target for Arsenal and Manchester City

Arsenal are tracking Geoffrey Kondogbia and Nabil Bentaleb, say the papers, while Manchester United are to bid £25million for Raheem Sterling.

ARSENAL CONSIDER KONDOGBIA BID

Speculation suggests Arsene Wenger will look to sign a new holding midfielder this summer, despite the form of Francis Coquelin in the second half of the season, and both the Daily Mirror and Daily Mail claim Monaco's Geoffrey Kondogbia is a target for the Arsenal boss.

Inter Milan have made an approach for the 22-year-old and are apparently willing to offer £18.5million, but that is short of Monaco's £25million valuation. Both newspapers report that Arsenal have asked to be kept informed of developments, therefore, while the Mail claims Manchester City are also interested in the France international, along with Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, who spent last season on loan at West Ham.

City are also said to be 'discussing a move' for France Under 18 international David Faupala, while they are also rivalling Manchester United for Valenciennes' 16-year-old defender Dayot Upamecano.

STERLING FAVOURS LONDON MOVE

Manchester United were reported to have had an enquiry about the availability of Raheem Sterling rejected out of hand by Liverpool last month, but the Red Devils are now set to further test the waters with a £25million bid, according to the Daily Mirror.

The newspaper says Louis van Gaal is convinced the 20-year-old will leave Anfield this summer and, although it says United's offer will be rejected, it could prompt Manchester City into making a firm approach of their own.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are all listed as further admirers, and the Mirror claims Sterling's preference is to move back to his home city of London.

BENTALEB TRACKED BY ARSENAL, PSG & JUVE

Nabil Bentaleb hopes his excellent form for Tottenham this season will be rewarded with an improved contract.

"I give everything on the pitch," he told the Daily Telegraph. "I've been working really hard and it's normal for me to want to get rewarded. We've been negotiating for nearly nine months now, since September, and it's getting really long and, of course, I'm getting a little bit tired of it."

Bentaleb has said he wants to stay at White Hart Lane, but the Telegraph claims Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have all sent scouts to watch the Algeria midfielder in action this season, possibly putting pressure on Spurs to get the Academy graduate tied to a longer-term deal as soon as possible.

AND THE REST

Divock Origi will return to Anfield next season and the 20-year-old is desperate to make his mark on Merseyside.

Liverpool signed Origi from Lille for £10m last summer before sending the striker back to the French side on loan.

He told Sky Sports News HQ:  "I think Liverpool is a wonderful club that deserves to be at the top and to be honest with the players they have, with the quality they have, then they should be finishing at the top of the league.

"I'm very happy to be going there. Brendan Rodgers is a very good coach and he has proved that so it will be very exciting to work with a world-class coach. Most of all it is important to be at a good club where people believe in you and where you feel good and at Liverpool I had a really good feeling and they have experience of working with young players.

"It's always nice to play with good players. The important thing is that I work hard and then I think everything will be okay."

Origi made 33 appearances last season and scored eight goals for Lille, including a hat-trick in a league game against Stade Rennes in March. He is expected to win his 14th cap for Belgium in a friendly against France in Bordeaux this weekend.
