Gary Lineker: England legend warns duo

Gary Lineker: England legend warns duo

Former England striker Gary Lineker has told Roy Hodgson and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to "stop sniping" over players.

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is at the centre of the latest club vs country controversy after he complained of tiredness ahead of England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia on Sunday and was left out of the starting line-up.

England manager Hodgson has since questioned Liverpool's fitness regime, which is based on a "two-day recovery" system - while Rodgers was angry last month after striker Daniel Sturridge suffered a thigh injury in England training.

Lineker, second on the list of England's all-time goalscorers, tweeted: "It's time Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers stopped sniping. It's at their player's expense.''

Sterling played the first half of England's 5-0 victory over San Marino on Thursday and came on as a 64th-minute substitute in England's 1-0 win in Tallinn.

After the Estonia game, Hodgson has risked causing a further rift with Rodgers by criticising the two-day recovery method the Liverpool manager uses to try to keep Sterling and other pacy players fit.

Rodgers spoke of his frustration at Hodgson's refusal to adopt the two-day recovery method for Sturridge last month after he pulled a thigh muscle during a sprint at an England training session.

It is understood the Northern Irishman also gives Sterling two days off after games to aid his return to peak fitness.

But Hodgson says there is little evidence the programme benefits players' recovery times.

"Raheem might say it is something that is becoming ingrained in him and that he felt the need to talk about being tired more than he would normally do," Hodgson said.

"But we have never had any problems with that. I don't think there is a lot of medical evidence to support the 'two-day recovery'.

"So if you want to, you might want to research that one.

"Certainly, the Germans who you admire so much - they don't do it. That is for certain.

"I would expect players not to take it for granted that there will be two-day recoveries."

Sterling responded on Twitter to those who had ridiculed him for asking to be rested just eight weeks into the season, saying "Excuse me for being human".

It is understood that England's medical staff will be contacting their counterparts at Liverpool this week to talk about Sterling's fitness and Hodgson himself will call Rodgers to discuss the matter.

"I think I should speak to Brendan, but it really is very simple and I am sure he understands that situation," Hodgson said.

"Raheem has played a lot of games recently and it is the first year in the Champions League for Liverpool for a while so the games have obviously been quite high-pressure games and I will tell him he looked a bit tired and I made the decision from that to play Adam Lallana.

"But Brendan has been talking anyway about the pressures Raheem has been under and the fatigue that may have set in a little bit so I am pretty sure that he will be dealing over the next month with Raheem as he sees fair."

England manager Roy Hodgson has made himself look “extremely stupid” according to Dutch fitness expert Raymond Verheijen, who previously worked with Barcelona and Wales national team.

STOKE, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 13, 2010: Liverpool's manager Roy Hodgson during the Premiership match against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Verheijen has fully backed Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, saying that Hodgson’s “incompetence must be frustrating for educated managers like Brendan Rodgers who travelled the world.”

Writing on his Twitter account, he said that [it is] “embarrassing to see dinosaur Hodgson questioning the fitness regime of the forward thinking manager Brendan Rodgers.”

“England manager Roy Hodgson once again made himself look extremely stupid,” he blasted. “He is the perfect example of a typical uneducated English coach.”

Earlier, Verheijen explained why players such as Raheem Sterling require a second recovery day:

According to Hodgson, there is no evidence that certain players (Sterling/Sturridge) need longer recovery time compared to other players.

Firstly, 19-year old players do not have a fully matured body yet. So for them the game demands are higher & will develop much more fatigue.

Young players who develop more fatigue during the game need longer time to get rid of this fatigue otherwise they accumulate fatigue in body.

Secondly, Sterling is not only a young but also an explosive player. They have many fast muscle fibres compared to less explosive players.

Fast muscle fibres recover slower compared to slow muscle fibres because less blood & oxygen is running through these fast muscle fibres.

This is why explosive players like Sterling need longer recovery time after a game to get rid of fatigue compared to less explosive player.

If explosive players do not get extra recovery time & are treated in the same way as other players, they accumulate fatigue in their body.

Thirdly accumulation of fatigue due to insufficient recovery makes the nervous system slower. The signal from brain to muscles travel slower.

If the signal from the brain arrives later in the muscles this means the brain has less control over body during explosive football actions.

So there’s much evidence that insufficient recovery, accumulation of fatigue & slower nervous system are dramatically increasing injury risk.

Thank you, Raymond.

First team coach Mike Marsh insists Liverpool's approach to training and recovery will not change despite their approaching busy schedule.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, September 15, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard during training at Melwood ahead of their opening UEFA Champions League Group B match against PFC Ludogorets Razgrad. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The club's training methods were criticised by England manager Roy Hodgson in the continuing fall-out from teenage forward Raheem Sterling's telling the national team boss he was tired ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifier in Estonia.

Hodgson disagrees with Rodgers' claim speedy players such as Sterling and Daniel Sturridge – who has not played since getting injured in a training session on international duty last month – require lighter duties in the 48 hours after a match and intends to speak to the Reds boss about it.

Starting on Sunday, Liverpool face seven games in 21 days – including two fixtures against Real Madrid and one against Premier League leaders Chelsea – but Marsh said their approach would not alter.

"It's a tough fixture list with the amount of games and the quality of the opposition so we know it's going to be tough, but the more players we have available the better," Marsh told liverpoolfc.com.

"With England there has been a lot of discussion recently. We don't really change. Our fitness programmes have been well documented.

"We try to recover the players as best we can to prepare for the games.

"We have a couple of days' recovery after the game and we work with the group that don't start (the previous match) and we build up to the next game and once one game finishes we try to recover as soon as possible.

"We try different ways. We do quite a lot of analysis with the players so we break them up into smaller groups and get players' feedback in different ways."

Sturridge is likely to be back for the weekend trip to QPR and – while that will be a welcome relief – Marsh believes having a bigger group to choose from was more important to deal with than the stresses of so many fixtures.

"We know Daniel is an important player for us as he offers the team goals but we have seven games in 21 days," he added.

"But with Emre (Can) and Joe (Allen) coming back it is important we have as many players as possible to select from."

Former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler said Sterling should be praised not vilified for his honesty.

"I take my hat off to Raheem," Fowler told the Liverpool Echo. "I'm chuffed that he had the guts to speak up and say what we did as it showed maturity.

"It was a selfless act and people are wrong to have a go at him. What he did was for the benefit of the team. Not everyone puts the team first like that.

"For a lot of players the priority is just getting caps and goals. Raheem was more concerned about three points and a win for England.

"As he didn't feel 100 per cent he didn't think he was able to go out there and play the way he wanted. England would have basically been playing with 10 men.

"Look at Diego Costa and what he did in the Champions League final with Atletico Madrid last season.

"He wasn't fit but started and ended up having to come off with a hamstring injury after nine minutes. It cost them.

"If a player isn't quite right it's best for everyone if he speaks up.

"Any team is much better off if all 11 players are fully fit and ready to perform."

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez claims Liverpool would never have mounted their unexpected title challenge last season without him.

The Uruguay international scored 31 Premier League goals as the Reds finished runners-up to Manchester City and insists he left Anfield a happy man this summer, when a B£75million deal took him to the Nou Camp.

That contrasted sharply with his feelings at the start of his final campaign in England, for which he was suspended as he was still serving some of his 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, and he was made to train on his own after trying to manufacture a move away.

While he was serving the remainder of his ban Liverpool picked up 10 points out of a possible 15 but having been reintegrated into the squad the striker returned with 19 goals in his first 12 league appearances as the Reds gathered increasing momentum on their way to second place.

"Personal success is always welcome and makes you happy, because that's recognition of the good work you have done," said Suarez, who is due to receive the Golden Shoe for being Europe's joint-leading scorer from Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish in Barcelona this week.

"But I put the team ahead of that and last season Liverpool came so close to winning the Premier League, which would have been spectacular."

Suarez added on fcbarcelona.com: "I appreciate all the work the team did but I missed six matches and scored all those goals in the Premier League without being the penalty-taker.

"The truth is that I left very happy because if I hadn't had the attitude and mentality to want to lead the team forward, I don't think Liverpool would have done as well as they did either.

"Getting back into the Champions League was another target I had in mind."

Luis Suarez says he is still 'upset' about being found guilty of making racist comments towards Patrice Evra back in 2011.

The Uruguayan served an eight-match ban but has always refused to apologise to the Frenchman. He even snubbed Evra's handshake when the pair met again on the pitch.

Suarez was asked in an interview with Barcelona's official website if he regretted anything in a career littered with controversy.

"When I say I'm sorry it's because I regret something," Suarez said. "Being sorry implies regret. But they have also sometimes judged me on things that aren't true, such as the racism thing.

"I was accused without evidence and that's what grieved me the most. The others were actions when it was me who did wrong. I accepted that and begged forgiveness, but the racism thing, when I was accused without evidence, that did upset me.

Conversely, Suarez is happy to apologise for his bite on Giorgio Chiellini and other teeth-related transgressions.

"It is good to accept that you have made a mistake and that's what I did," he said. "I left it a few days [last summer] because you have to remember that I'm only human and sometimes it's hard to face the truth. I found it hard to take in and to realise what I had done.

"Those were days when I didn't want to know about it. I just wanted to be with my wife and children, who supported me through that time. I didn't want to listen to anybody, or speak to anybody. I didn't want to accept it."

In a well timed article, Liverpool have explained their fitness and recovery methods in an interview with first-team coach Mike Marsh.

BASEL, SWITZERLAND - Tuesday, September 30, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard during a training session at the St. Jakob Stadium ahead of the UEFA Champions League Group B match against FC Basel. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The interview arrives on the back of Roy Hodgson questioning the club’s need for fast players to have two days recovery following matches.

Hodgson, you see, wasn’t content with the damage already done by publicly embarrassing Raheem Sterling in interviews both before and after England’s 1-1 draw in Estonia on Sunday and again ran to his media chums to give further quotes that were published in Tuesday’s papers.

Hodgson states:

“We have never had any problems with that [Liverpool’s policy] but I don’t think there is a lot of medical evidence to support the two-day recovery so, if you want to, you might want to research that.”

Of course, there is actually plenty of research explaining the need for two days recovery, with even the most lamen athlete knowing the effects of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) two days after high intensity.

Brendan Rodgers is a manager who has a high understanding of sports science, being a knowledgeable and modern manager, the opposite of 67-year-old, never won a trophy outside of Scandinavia, Hodgson.

Marsh explains Liverpool’s training programme, ahead of a fixture list that sees Rodgers’ side face seven games in 21 days:

“Our fitness programmes have been well documented. We try to recover the players as best we can to prepare for the game. We have a couple of days’ recovery after the game and we work with the group of players for the next game.

“We do quite a lot of analysis with the players so we break them up into smaller groups and feed back in different ways.”

In an interview earlier this year, head of fitness and conditioning, Ryland Morgans, explained how players at Liverpool follow individualised training plans:

“All players follow an individual plan off the grass. Each player is different, so elements such as age, playing position, injury background, strengths and weaknesses, are all considered when putting these plans together.”

Rodgers’ pre-match press conference this week could be interesting viewing.

Theo Walcott: On his way back for Arsenal

Theo Walcott: On his way back for Arsenal

The returns of Didier Drogba, Phil Jones, Sami Nasri, Joe Allen and Theo Walcott could hugely affect the title race, writes Matt Stanger.

Didier Drogba

The biggest encouragement to Chelsea's rivals in the title race is the Blues' over-reliance on Diego Costa. The 26-year-old leads the scoring chart with nine goals but is bound to need a rest at some stage after Jose Mourinho admitted he is hardly training, owing to a nagging hamstring injury.

This is where Drogba comes in. Despite his 36 years, the Ivorian potentially offers a similar threat to Costa in his strength and hold-up play, unlike Loic Remy.

The question is whether he is fit enough to replicate his influence in the dressing room on the pitch.

An ankle injury sustained in September will keep Drogba out for another week, but Mourinho will then hope the striker can step into Costa's shoes.

Things didn't exactly go to plan when Drogba replaced the Brazilian in the 1-1 draw against Schalke, and it's vital that the man who hit Chelsea's Champions League-winning penalty in 2012 is soon up to speed.

Phil Jones

Strikers win games but defenders win titles, or so the saying goes, which leaves Manchester United's hopes of reclaiming the Premier League crown in considerable doubt.

Only six clubs have conceded more goals than United thus far, with injuries leaving Louis van Gaal with a defensive headache.

"I want my defensive organisation to be better but the defence begins in the striker's position," said Van Gaal last week.

"It's teamwork, so when we concede a goal it's not only because of an individual error from the defence. It starts somewhere else and that is what we have to analyse and improve."

While the manager might want his midfield to provide more protection to the back four, he will also be looking for Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans to improve the team's performances when they return from the sidelines.

Jones in particular is facing a pivotal season. By now, there isn't much hope remaining that Smalling - who turns 25 in six weeks' time - will ever fulfil the potential Sir Alex Ferguson saw in him, but Jones has more time on his side.

The 22-year-old can finally enjoy a run at centre-half - as long as he stays fit - and it is now up to him to prove he can lead a title-challenging defence.

Samir Nasri

Nasri's absence appears to have slipped under the radar, which is strange considering his contribution in Manchester City's title success last season.

The 27-year-old scored seven goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League, before things turned sour when he was omitted from France's World Cup squad and then suffered a groin injury at the start of the current campaign.

After undergoing surgery, Nasri is expected to be out for another month, which comes as a significant blow to Manuel Pellegrini.

"Of course he's a very important player for us," said the manager. "It's not easy for us not to play with Samir."

City's 1-1 draw with Roma and late win at Aston Villa emphasised the loss of Nasri's subtlety and the playmaker's understanding with David Silva and Sergio Aguero.

With Jesus Navas yet to prove a convincing replacement, Nasri's return should provide a timely boost ahead of the busy winter schedule.

Joe Allen

It might seem strange to find Allen on a list of key players in the title race - or indeed Liverpool, considering their faltering start - but the midfielder's return from a knee injury could play an important role in the Reds' revival.

With Steven Gerrard struggling as a holding midfielder Allen could be the best option to start alongside the captain and act as an 'enabler', allowing the 34-year-old vital space in which to operate.

It's a view shared by Brendan Rodgers, who told the Liverpool Echo recently: "Joe is a player who never gets mentioned but he's a player who rarely turns over the ball. He loves the football and gets other people playing.

"The key feature for Joe on top of that is the intensity in his pressure. He presses the game very well. He's a very intelligent footballer. Tactically, he's outstanding and we've really missed his energy and his quality since he's been out."

Allen was a regular feature in last season's run-in, playing in 12 of the last 14 matches as Liverpool narrowly missed out on the title, but has only made three appearances in the current campaign.

Rodgers has revealed that he should be fit after the international break, however, and the manager will aim to ensure the 24-year-old is the missing link to getting the best out of Gerrard.

Theo Walcott

Probably the most important player on this list following the news that Mesut Ozil will be out for 10-12 weeks with a knee injury.

Walcott's lengthy absence has coincided with the German receiving intense criticism for his performances, and it was thought that the England forward's recovery could help to bring the best out of his team-mate.

Ozil's ability to spot a pass is perfectly exploited by Walcott's speed to burst beyond opposition defences but, frustratingly, that combination will now have to wait.

Walcott's direct style should still be a huge benefit to Arsenal in the meantime. The 25-year-old scored five goals and claimed four assists in only 13 Premier League appearances last season, underlining his value to Arsene Wenger's side.

With Walcott set to return to full training following the international break, Wenger will hope that it won't be long until he's fully fit to fire Arsenal through a packed schedule of 13 matches in November and December.

Raheem Sterling has come in for plenty of criticism having complained of being tired, but he has done exactly what similarly prodigious talents Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler didn’t do, explains Henry Jackson.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the first goal against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Raheem Sterling’s decision to tell Roy Hodgson he was too tired to play in England’s game with Estonia was a sensible decision by the 19-year-old.

He has received an unacceptable amount of criticism for doing so, but you have to ask what on earth Hodgson was playing at telling the media of Sterling’s comments. His managerial ineptitude should be the real talking point here.

Either way, Sterling has shown a maturity and honesty in his behaviour. He has played nine games in the last month – Brendan Rodgers‘ decision to play him for 120 minutes against Middlesbrough in the League Cup is admittedly slightly baffling – and his form has suffered because of it.

He has lacked the zip of the latter half of last season, although it’s worth stressing he still looks the Reds’ most dangerous player in most games, which just highlights the level he has reached in such a short time.

People say “how can a 19-year-old be tired”, but there is so much more to it than physical fatigue. Sterling has enormous pressure on his shoulders for both club and country now. He is one of the first names on the teamsheet in both sides, which is rare for a player not yet out of his teens.

When you are that young, and so much is expected of you, mentally it will take a toll. A World Cup earlier on in the year was also an extra excursion.

Rodgers has spoken in the past about being incredibly careful when it comes to managing Sterling, knowing that the risk of burnout is a constant threat.

Past Cases

There are numerous examples of footballers who have played regular (eg. too much) football at a young age, only to fade away years before their supposed peak. Just take a look at two former Liverpool strikers for starters.

Both Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler were superstars in their late teens and early twenties. Both were scoring huge amounts of goals and were integral to Liverpool’s success. They both played too much while they were still growing though, and injuries eventually got the better of them.

It seems unfathomable that both peaked at around 21 or 22 years of age, but they did. Owen was 24 when he moved to Real Madrid, and he had lost a yard of pace by that stage in his career.

Fowler, meanwhile, spent his last few years under Gerard Houllier as a squad player at time despite only being in his mid twenties. He was deemed old when he returned to Anfield in January 2006, yet he was just 30.

Liverpool, England - Wednesday, November 27th, 1996: Liverpool's Robbie Fowler in action during the 4-2 victory over Arsenal during the 4th Round of the League Cup at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Elsewhere, players like Raul and Ronaldo (the Brazilian variety) excelled at an early age but, despite still being huge talents, were shadows of their former selves by the age of 27 or 28. Wayne Rooney was an astonishing prospect at Euro 2004 when he was 18, but despite being just 28 now, he’s barely improved since.

Kieron Dyer, who was ridiculed by many because of his injury woes throughout his career, was a huge prospect as a teenager but was played so often he picked up constant problems later on.

These are just a few examples from English football in recent years. Yet England fans are quick to criticise and judge Sterling when he actually has the sense to require a rest to avoid the same fate.

Learning From The Enemy

If there is one person who Rodgers should learn from when it comes to managing young players, it’s Sir Alex Ferguson. It may pain some Reds fanatics to admit it, but the Scot was superb in the way he kept the likes of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs fresh in their youth.

He gave them holidays to recharge their batteries, and didn’t play them too frequently when their bodies were still developing. Had he done the opposite, heaping too much pressure on them and playing them a dangerous amount, there is every chance they wouldn’t have had the huge levels of success they did. When you think about it, not one of the ‘Class Of 92′ was remotely injury prone. Is that just a coincidence?

Conclusion

Sterling is such an exciting prospect, the most electrifying youngster Liverpool have seen since Owen, but it would be tragic to see his wonderful talent diminish by the age of 25. Of course we would all love to see him play every game, but if that happens his career could easily go the same way as those mentioned above.

Quite why so many people have laid into him following Sunday’s comments remain something of a mystery – they would be the first to call Sterling selfish if he’d played despite knowing he wasn’t fully fit – especially former players and respected journalists. Sometimes you just can’t win.

Sterling is clearly aware of ‘doing an Owen or a Fowler’ though, which is refreshing to see, and Rodgers has a massive job in making sure he doesn’t overplay him. It’s just a shame so many ‘experts’ can’t see the full picture.

Raheem Sterling right to require rest, just look at Michael Owen to realise why

Unknown   at  00:28  No comments

Raheem Sterling has come in for plenty of criticism having complained of being tired, but he has done exactly what similarly prodigious talents Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler didn’t do, explains Henry Jackson.

Another international break is finally over and we can begin to look forward to Liverpool’s trip to QPR on Sunday. But it hasn’t been without bad news, again.

Dejan Lovren and Lazar Markovic have picked up injuries with Croatia and Serbia, respectively, with each expected to miss at least two weeks.

Lovren suffered an abdominal injury while training with Croatia on Thursday and returned to Merseyside over the weekend.

According to PhysioRoom, Lovren is targeting a return on October 22nd – the day of Liverpool’s home match against Real Madrid.

His injury, along with Mamadou Sakho currently sidelined with a thigh problem, means Liverpool only have Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure available at centre-back.

Markovic was injured during Serbia’s 1-1 draw against Armenia on Saturday. The 20-year-old attacker was withdrawn after 25 minutes with a suspected muscle tear.

Reports in Serbia, via The Liverpool Echo, claim Markovic will miss two to three weeks. He’ll be assessed by Liverpool’s medical team early this week.

On the positive side, Joe Allen and Daniel Sturridge should be fit to return against QPR, while Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli have been rested over the past week.

Several LFC players took the opportunity to head abroad during the break, with Lucas Leiva back in Brazil and Jose Enrique heading to Dubai.

Carvajal told Spanish newspaper Sport:

“This proposal was never made to us by Brendan Rodgers or Liverpool at any moment. Liverpool has not offered training [for] four days and we have refused, because it [the report] is false.”

He was speaking after a report in the Sunday People claimed Valdes had turned down Rodgers’ request to undergo a four day trial at Melwood in order to prove his fitness after being sidelined with an ACL injury since March.

Talks between Liverpool and Valdes’ representatives were reported to have begun late last week, with a view to the former Barcelona goalkeeper joining the club on a free transfer.
