Nathaniel Clyne: Subject of a £10m bid from Liverpool

Nathaniel Clyne: Subject of a £10m bid from Liverpool

Liverpool have had a £10m bid for right-back Nathaniel Clyne turned down by Southampton, according to Sky Sports sources.

The England international has just a year remaining on his contract and has also reportedly been the subject of recent interest from Manchester United.

With Glen Johnson set to leave Anfield when his contract expires this summer and Jon Flanagan sidelined till the end of the year after further knee surgery, Liverpool have turned their attention to Clyne.

The 24-year-old joined Southampton from Crystal Palace in 2012 and made 41 appearances for Ronald Koeman’s team during the 2014/15 season.

Clyne earned his first England cap last November, playing the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Slovenia, and has gone on to make four international appearances.

Liverpool currently have on-loan Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo in their ranks as well as Northern Ireland international Ryan McLaughlin.

Former England U21 international Andre Wisdom, who has spent the season on loan at West Brom, can also play at right-back.

Floral tributes are laid at the foot of the Heysel memorial plaque at Anfield

Floral tributes are laid at the foot of the Heysel memorial plaque at Anfield

UEFA president Michel Platini says the horrors of the Heysel disaster have "never left" him as football marks the 30th anniversary of the tragedy.

A collapsing wall at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels before the start of the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool on May 29, 1985 caused 39 deaths and over 600 injuries.

The match went ahead and Platini, then a Juventus midfielder, scored his side's winner from the penalty spot - but his memories of the night are overwhelmed by the pre-match tragedy.

In a statement released on UEFA's website on Friday morning, Platini wrote: "Thirty years ago, I played in a European Champion Clubs' Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. And I continue to play in that final.

"It hasn't left me, just like it hasn't left anyone else who was there that night, and remains with all those who lost a loved one, for whom everything changed in a few terrible minutes.

"Thirty years later, I am the president of UEFA, the organisation that organised the match, and I am working every day with all my colleagues and friends at the national associations, leagues and clubs to ensure that we will never again experience the horror of such a night.

"We have been working unceasingly for the last 30 years to guarantee safety and security at sporting venues across Europe.

"On the 30th anniversary of that fateful night, my thoughts are with the 39 people who lost their lives and, of course, with their friends and families. I can only express my deepest sympathy and reiterate that I am still doing everything in my power to prevent such a tragedy from happening again."

Survivors and relatives of the victims marked the anniversary at the King Baudouin Stadium, which was renovated and renamed after the tragedy, by laying flowers and wreaths as a remembrance.

Juventus are holding an evening mass as a tribute at Turin's Chiesa della Gran Madre di Dio Church, while Liverpool held an early-morning memorial service at Anfield.

Phil Neal, Liverpool's captain at the time of the disaster, laid a floral tribute at the foot of the Heysel memorial plaque in the Centenary Stand.

Neal said: "It was an honour for me to lay a wreath at the Heysel memorial in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

"What happened at Heysel will always be with me and everybody else who was there on that terrible day - we will never forget."

Juve's sporting director Gianluca Pessotto and former player Massimo Bonini laid 39 white lilies at Anfield, one for each life lost.

Ian Rush, who was part of Liverpool's team in the final and also played for Juventus during his career, will reciprocate by representing the Reds in Turin.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre said: "This is - and always will be - a hugely important day in the history of Liverpool Football Club. I thank Juventus Football Club for inviting us to attend their mass in Turin and for their ongoing friendship."

Steven Gerrard: Heading for the United States

Steven Gerrard: Heading for the United States

Steven Gerrard is set to make his debut for Los Angeles Galaxy on July 11 in an International Champions Cup game at home to Mexico's Club America.

The 34-year-old midfielder is currently on an end-of-season break in Dubai after bringing the curtain down on his Liverpool career in Sunday's 6-1 defeat at Stoke.

When he returns, Gerrard will begin preparations for his switch to Major League Soccer, although he cannot officially play for the Galaxy until the league's summer transfer window opens on July 8.

And coach Bruce Arena has already pencilled in Gerrard's first appearance in a Galaxy shirt against Club America.

"We expect him here before July 11," Arena told lagalaxy.com.

"We haven't finalised a date yet. He will be here, he'll get some training in and by the time that he's eligible to play; he'll be ready to go."

Gerrard is third in Liverpool’s all-time list after 710 appearances for the club in 17 seasons and has already stated he wants to return to Anfield in the future in some capacity.

"I want to keep playing every week in the final few years of my career and I'm looking forward to embarking on a new challenge with Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS," he wrote in a letter on Liverpool’s official website.

"I hope to get the opportunity to come back and serve the club again one day.

"I feel that I can make a contribution in some role in the future."

Mario Balotelli: Set to stay at Liverpool next season

Mario Balotelli: Set to stay at Liverpool next season

Mario Balotelli's agent Mino Raiola has revealed that the Italy international will not be leaving Anfield this summer.

The former Manchester City striker has been linked with a move away from Merseyside after a disappointing campaign which has seen him omitted from the squad during the latter part of the season.

But, Balotelli’s agent Mina Raiola insisted his client is going nowhere.

“We had talks with Liverpool and he will definitely stay,” he said.

Earlier in the season, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers suggested that he and Balotelli were struggling to adapt to each other’s way of working.

But Raiola feels the striker took those comments on board and has worked hard to try and fit it in with Liverpool’s pattern of play.

“I think Mario did (adapt),” Raiola said. “I can’t talk about Brendan Rodgers, obviously that is something for Brendan, but I think Mario did.

“I have spoken at various times to the club and they were happy with his input and professionalism. Obviously we have to improve the performance but I am really confident that will happen this year.”

Balotelli has scored once in 16 Premier League appearances after joining the club in a £16m deal from AC Milan last summer.

Steven Gerrard: Has written farewell letter to Liverpool fans

Steven Gerrard: Has written farewell letter to Liverpool fans

Steven Gerrard has penned an open letter to Liverpool supporters stating he wants to return to the club in the future in some capacity.

The 34-year-old, who is third in Liverpool’s all-time list after 710 appearances for the club in 17 seasons, will complete his move to Major League Soccer Los Angeles Galaxy in the coming weeks.

But the departing captain, who was first given the armband by Gerard Houllier in 2003, says he wants to come back one day despite moving abroad for regular football and a new challenge.

"It's been a massive honour to be captain of this club for so long,” he wrote in a letter on Liverpool’s official website.

"I've always given my best and tried to lead by example. But today is all about looking back and saying thank you to the fans for the magnificent support you have given me over the past two decades.

"You have helped me to fulfil my dreams over and over again and given me memories I wouldn't swap for anything.

“Liverpool is my home and I love this city. But I believe the time is right to open a new chapter as I prepare to move to America.

“I want to keep playing every week in the final few years of my career and I'm looking forward to embarking on a new challenge with Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS.

“I'll be away for the next couple of years but this isn't the end of my long association with Liverpool FC. I've been a supporter all my life and that will continue.

"I hope to get the opportunity to come back and serve the club again one day. I feel that I can make a contribution in some role in the future."

Despite the absence of a league title from his medal collection Gerrard has won two FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Cup and two UEFA Super Cups during his Liverpool career.

But he points to the dramatic 2005 Champions League final triumph against AC Milan - where Liverpool came back to win after trailing 3-0 at half-time - as the highlight of his career and the ‘best night of his life’.

“I've loved every minute of playing for the best supporters in the world,” he said.

“It's been an amazing journey. There have been some glorious highs and some crushing lows, but throughout you have given me fantastic support and I'll never forget that.

“The highs have been all the sweeter because they have been achieved with my boyhood club. We have shared those special moments together.

“Of course the pinnacle of my career arrived in Istanbul 10 years ago. That was the best night of my life. When I lifted the European Cup, there was no prouder man on the planet.

“It meant so much to me to deliver that trophy for you. The supporters played such a big part in helping to inspire that famous comeback against AC Milan. I'll never forget how they helped to lift our chins off the floor after that nightmare first half.”

Liverpool are not considering replacing under-fire manager Brendan Rodgers this summer, according to Sky sources.

The Reds, who finished second in the 2013/2014 season, ended a disappointing season with a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Stoke on Saturday - prompting speculation Rodgers would be shown the door by the Liverpool owners.

In the wake of that game, which saw Steven Gerrard bow out with a consolation goal, Rodgers said: "I've always said that if the owners want me to go, then I go. It's as simple as that.

"But I still feel I've got a lot to offer the club. A lot has happened this year which has made the job difficult, but I totally understand that.

"We finish in sixth position, which is where we deserve to finish. It’s a big, big summer ahead. We lose Steven after today and you’ve seen again his inspiration in the team to get a goal. We’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do.

“I think it’s clear, you look at our goals over the course of the season and [the lack of goals] has been the major contributing factor.

“I’ve had to look at different ideas and different ways to make the team create and score more.

“We’ve taken our beating today. Stoke were better than us, especially in that first half. Second half we were much better and much more authoritative in the game, but still we can’t take much away from losing 6-1.”

But despite the heavy loss at the Britannia Stadium condemning the Reds to a sixth-place Premier League finish, soruces at the club have suggested a season review will stop short of looking for a new manager.

Steven Gerrard has played his last game for Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has played his last game for Liverpool

Liverpool are making a big mistake in allowing Steven Gerrard to leave the club, according to Paul Merson and Neil McCann.

Gerrard will join up with LA Galaxy in July and played his final game for Liverpool at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday, a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Stoke.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is expected to launch a major rebuilding job this summer but Gerrard will not be part of the plans as he begins life in the MLS.

Merson insists Gerrard is still world class and thinks it is a mistake to let a player of his calibre leave.

"He’s still their best player and is their top scorer," he told the Morning View.

"I can’t believe they haven’t kept this lad, he’s world class - and they haven’t got any world class players. He’s their world class player. To let him go is really beyond me."

McCann feels Liverpool needed him to attract star-quality signings in the summer as they look to strengthen their squad after a disappointing campaign.

"He is still one of the top performers in the country by a long way," he said. "To have an icon like Steven Gerrard leaving the club is almost criminal.

"To keep someone as an attraction at the club is so important."

Brendan Rodgers is set for talks with FSG this week

Brendan Rodgers is set for talks with FSG this week

Brendan Rodgers has been backed to turn things around at Liverpool amid speculation over his future.

Liverpool suffered a 6-1 defeat to Stoke on the final day of the season which has intensified pressure on Rodgers ahead of a meeting with FSG this week.

Rodgers made a number of signings last summer but the Morning View panel believe he will again have to strengthen his squad in all areas.

Niall Quinn accepts the loss of Luis Suarez was one which had a detrimental impact on the team, while Alan Smith and Neil McCann feel Rodgers needs to find the right blend at Liverpool.

“He is a talented coach and has got a lot of work to do," said Smith. "He is going to have to hope that some of the lads that he’s brought in that didn’t do so well this season will develop in the second season, the likes of Markovic, Moreno and Can.

"It is going to be a hard job getting them where he wants them to be in the next couple of years but if I was a betting man I’d say he will be there.”

McCann claimed Rodgers needs to focus on strenghtening his squad in defensive areas.

“Momentum is a great thing in sport," he said. "It was a crushing blow to be so close to title so late on (last season).  As Alan said the money he has spent and the guys he has brought recruited have not done it.

"A certain way that Brendan wants to play is attractive to watch sometimes but ultimately defensively they have been poor. They have been too open. There are too many good sides in the Premier League.

"I think the owners with the money they have given Brendan to spend will want to see them being recognised as a top team. It might upset a few Liverpool fans but they are not one of the top teams in England and they should be.

"I do think Brendan will be given another opportunity and should be given another opportunity. He must adapt his style a little bit."

Niall Quinn added: “They signed a lot of players with the funds that came in for Suarez, but how do you replace Suarez? I have a lot of sympathy for Brendan Rodgers there.

"If you would have held on to Suarez for another year or two things might have been a lot different. Brendan should be given more time, because they are his players and they were given to him in a bundle at the start of this season.

"They may have been shaky defensively but they need a goal scorer and Sturridge has to get himself back next year back in top form.”

Brendan Rodgers should stay at Liverpool, say Sky Sports experts

Kolo Toure: Keen to remain at Anfield

Defender Kolo Toure believes he is close to agreeing a contract extension at Liverpool.

The 34-year-old former Ivory Coast international is keen to finish his career in England and wants to stay at Anfield.

Toure is confident of sorting out a new 12-month deal, saying: "I think the situation will be resolved soon. We are talking.

“There are few things more but we will see. Liverpool is a great club for me to stay at. Liverpool is going to be massive.

"I love Premier League football and I played all my years here. If I can finish here (Liverpool) it would be great.

"My kids go to school here and they are half-English and that is important as well.

"I play for Liverpool right now and I am very happy and if it was to carry on, I'd be more than happy."

As for their 6-1 defeat at Stoke on Sunday, he added: "It is not a great finish to the season and it is difficult to find words at the end of that.

"We were expecting a better result for Liverpool and Stevie (Gerrard) as well for what he has done. We wanted to do better for him.”

Stoke: Finished season with 6-1 win over Liverpool

Stoke: Finished season with 6-1 win over Liverpool

Mark Hughes believes most teams would have struggled to cope with Stoke at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday when they put six past Liverpool.

In his two years in charge, Hughes has guided Stoke to successive ninth-placed finishes, setting plenty of records along the way.

Last season's tally of 50 points was a record as the Potters finished inside the top 10 of the Premier League for the first time, but they ended this campaign with 54, as well as a positive goal difference for the first time.

"We couldn't have asked for a better finish to a really great season," Hughes said after Sunday's game.

"The level of performance in that first 45 minutes was exceptional and I don't think it reflects badly on Liverpool. I think most teams would have struggled to cope with the quality and intensity of our play.

"It is a great performance against a very good team with great individual talents, and we have been able to get the level of performance that I think a lot of people sensed we were capable of.

"Everything came together and we showed what a good side we are."

Stoke blitzed their hosts in a 23-minute spell from the middle of the first half, with Mame Diouf (two), Jon Walters, Charlie Adam and Steven Nzonzi putting them 5-0 up before the break.

Substitute Peter Crouch rounded off the scoring late on after Steven Gerrard, on his 710th and last appearance for the club, scored a goal which brought the whole of the Britannia Stadium to its feet.

"I am sure Steven wasn't anticipating the manner of that being his last performance, but credit to him he was trying to drive his team on and it was great he got that reception from our supporters when he scored," said Hughes.

"It is only right and proper we recognise the impact he has had in English football and at his club as well.

"To a man everyone applauded that goal. I wish him well, he has been a credit to his country and his club as well."

Origi is set to join up with Liverpool this summer

Origi is set to join up with Liverpool this summer

Liverpool forward Divock Origi has been named in Ligue 1's worst team of the season by French newspaper L’Equipe after his year on loan at Lille.

The striker has scored eight times in 33 appearances for the French side, who finished eighth in Ligue 1 this season.

But the 20-year-old has failed to win fans over in France during a difficult campaign, during which he went over five months without scoring between October and March.

L’Equipe rated every player over the course of the season, and the Belgium international ended the campaign with an average rating of 4.46, putting him in the newspaper’s worst XI.

Liverpool signed the striker for £10m from Lille last summer but let him stay at the club to develop before moving to Anfield at the end of this campaign.

The Reds have struggled for goals this season as they ended in sixth place, with Steven Gerrard’s nine goals making him the club’s top scorer in the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers’ men scored just 52 times in the top flight this season, compared to 101 last term, and the Reds will be hoping Origi can bring goals to Anfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers apologised to the travelling fans after his side's 6-1 defeat at Stoke City but insisted he is the right man to lead the club.

Mark Hughes’ side ran riot in the first half as they raced to a 5-0 lead, ending the contest after just 45 minutes.

It was a disappointing end to Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool career, and Rodgers was dejected after their first-half display.

“I’ve got two apologies to make,” he said. “Firstly to the supporters because it was nowhere near good enough or competitive enough from any of us representing Liverpool today. A very, very poor performance in that first half.

“The second apology goes to my son [Swindon player Anton Rodgers], because I was supposed to go down to Wembley to see him in the [League One] play-off final, but I can’t leave here and shoot away after that.

“There’s a lot of reflecting to do after that performance. Just a really disappointing first half.

“We were really defensively poor in a couple of moments that we spoke about before the game, in terms of stopping crosses. We were too easily beaten in one-v-one situations and that led to openings for them to score.

“There were some outstanding goals but we certainly didn’t help ourselves.”

Asked if he understood the pressure was building on him, the Northern Irishman said: "Yes, absolutely. I've always said that if the owners want me to go, then I go. It's as simple as that.

"But I still feel I've got a lot to offer the club. A lot has happened this year which has made the job difficult, but I totally understand that."

The Liverpool boss also explained his decision to drop Raheem Sterling to the bench, after the 20-year-old has dominated the headlines amid a contract row with the club.

"I felt there’s obviously been a lot going on in the past weeks in particular," he said. "And I felt there were other players mentally better positioned to play in the game. It was as simple as that, really."

Gerrard scored Liverpool’s solitary goal on Sunday afternoon, meaning he finished the season with nine Premier League strikes and ended as the club’s top scorer.

It’s the second season in succession their top scorer as departed, after Luis Suarez’s exit last summer, and Rodgers admitted there needs to be an improvement in front of goal.

He said: “We finish in sixth position, which is where we deserve to finish.

Jonathan Walters and Mame Biram Diouf celebrate

Stoke ruined Steven Gerrard’s farewell as they hammered Liverpool 6-1 after a superb first-half display at the Britannia Stadium.

Mame Biram Diouf fired a quick double before Jonathan Walters, Charlie Adam and a Steven N’Zonzi thunderbolt put the hosts five in front at half time.

Gerrard got on the scoresheet as he signed off with a goal in the second half, before Peter Crouch added a sixth to overtake Alan Shearer in the charts for most headed Premier League goals.

The big news before the game was the omission of Raheem Sterling from the starting line-up, after a contract row which culminated in the club cancelling scheduled talks with the 20-year-old.

Attention soon turned to Gerrard’s farewell, but it was to be a miserable afternoon where he conceded five goals in a Premier League game for the first time.

Tottenham’s win at Everton means the Reds end up in sixth place, and they will have to await the result of the FA Cup final to see at which stage they will enter the Europa League next season.

Manchester City would be interested in signing Raheem Sterling if the Liverpool forward were to become available for transfer, according to Sky sources.

However, City have not made any sort of bid for the 20-year-old England international, who still has two years remaining on his contract at Anfield.

There are also a number of other factors that have to be taken into account regarding any possible transfer to the Etihad, not least the fact that Reds manager Brendan Rodgers insisted on Friday that he expected Sterling to remain at the club this summer despite refusing to sign a new deal.

It is also understood that if Liverpool were to decide to sell Sterling then they would prefer to sell him to a club abroad rather than one of their Premier League rivals.

As for City, any possible move is likely to depend on what happens with the likes of Samir Nasri and James Milner, whose futures with the club have yet to be sorted out.

Sterling has been linked with a move away from Liverpool for several months and talks over his future scheduled for Friday were cancelled by the club.

Rodgers said at his press conference on Friday: "Raheem has two years left and I expect him to see that two years through and continue to behave as immaculately as he has done.

“I don’t see Raheem being unhappy. Raheem’s representative made it very clear that they wanted to speak at the end of the season, so for us our concentration is really on the last game of the season, so I am sure talks will take place over the course of the summer.

"We want to resolve the (contract) situation but it doesn't change my approach to him. There is no problem there.”

Raheem Sterling: Deserves Liverpool fans' backing, says Brendan Rodgers

Raheem Sterling: Deserves Liverpool fans' backing, says Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers says Raheem Sterling "is being led by his representative" and deserves the support of the Liverpool fans at Stoke on Sunday.

The 20-year-old's name has been splashed over the back pages all week which culminated in a scheduled meeting with his agent, Rodgers and chief executive Ian Ayre being cancelled after the club took issue to comments made by his representative Aidy Ward.

Suggestions on Monday that the youngster would not sign a new deal appeared to be confirmed on Thursday when an astounding report was published in the London Evening Standard in which the newspaper claimed Ward had said Sterling would not even accept £900,000 a week from the Reds.

However, Rodgers was full of praise for the winger and does not believe he should be criticised by the fans.

"My message to the supporters would be: 'Look, this is a young boy who in my time as manager has given the football club everything,"' Rodgers told national newspapers.

"He was thrust into the team at 17 years of age. In the following period he has been exceptional for me. He has had dips in form and performances but only because his standards are so high.

"He's a young man who has obviously passed on his career to other people and, unfortunately, whether people perceive it as right or wrong, he is being led by the representative.

"But the young boy I see on a daily basis and who I work with is still the same boy who wants to learn and I think the supporters will just continue to show what they always do, which is wonderful support for every player in the Liverpool shirt."

Rodgers has not given up hope of getting Sterling to sign a new contract but he would prefer to achieve it in a much less public way than has happened so far.

Liverpool's annoyance peaked with them pulling the plug on Friday's get-together and Rodgers would like things to be done out of the public glare.

"It's very difficult to comment on what other people speak about but we've always been very clear here at Liverpool - if we have any meetings or discussions to take place, whether it's with players, manager or whatever, it'll all be dealt with internally," he said.

"We don't like to publicise what we're going to do. We just look to do it in-house and as privately as possibly can be.

"The concentration for myself is to continue to improve Raheem as a football player."

Liverpool - or more significantly the owners Fenway Sports Group - have drawn a line in the sand, having effectively pointed to their handling of Luis Suarez when he tried to manufacture a move away in 2013, and will not be bullied by the player or agent.

"Raheem has two years left (on his contract) and I expect him to see that two years through and continue to behave as immaculately as he has done," added Rodgers.

Rodgers is set to meet owners FSG for an end-of-season review and asked if he feels reassured co-owners John Henry and Tom Werner will stick by him and ask him to lead the club next season following that review, Rodgers replied: "Yeah, yeah. 150 per cent."

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard: Midfield duo play their final Premier League games this weekend

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard: Midfield duo play their final Premier League games this weekend

Roy Hodgson wants Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard to be part of the England coaching staff when they retire from playing.

Lampard and Gerrard play their final Premier League games this weekend before going to play in the United States.

Seventeen years after making his debut, Gerrard will turn out for Liverpool for the final time at Stoke City and Lampard's two decades in the top-flight end with Manchester City's home game against Southampton.

Hodgson admits the Reds and Lampard’s former club Chelsea will be in pole position for the pair’s coaching services but hopes they could be involved with England in the same way Gary Neville has been.

"Probably, yes," Hodgson said when asked if they could form part of the England backroom staff in the future.

"Before that, I'm sure the first people who will try to get hold of them when they return will be Liverpool and Chelsea. I'm pretty sure of that.

"But who's to say they can't be members in an English set-up as well? They certainly know England. They've both had 100 caps. But it's not only their playing ability. It's their leadership qualities. They're both leaders."

Gerrard and Lampard are both doing their coaching badges and Hodgson believes the pair have real potential to be successful managers.

"Both of them have the same ability to do that," he said. "I wouldn't want to put a cigarette paper between them in that respect.

"Their effect on English football has been quite incredible. But I'd rather speak personally.

"What they've done for me during my time as England manager has been quite fantastic not only on the field as players and in training as players, but also as leaders and characters, they've both been outstanding and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart.

"They've been real role models for the rest of the players, they've had a natural authority due to the fact they are such good players but they have used their authority in the right way to encourage the younger players to make certain that their strong ethos, which as a coaching staff we share, is spread out amongst all the players.

"I can't thank them enough for what they've done. I really hope they enjoy their American adventures and they will come back even stronger individuals and leaders than they already are.

"We will see an awful lot of benefits going forward with those two players. I can't imagine a long-term future in English football without major contributions from Gerrard and Lampard."

Asmir Begovic: Set to return in goal for Stoke

Asmir Begovic is set to return in goal for Stoke's final Premier League game of the season against Liverpool at the Britannia Stadium.

Raheem Sterling: Seemingly wants to leave Liverpool

Raheem Sterling: Seemingly wants to leave Liverpool

Gary Neville believes Liverpool are in danger of losing their status as one of the Europe's biggest clubs as key players continue to look to leave.

Liverpool have been unable to agree a contract extension with Raheem Sterling, who is expected to be targeted by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City this summer and could follow in the footsteps of Luis Suarez, who left the club 12 months ago to join Barcelona.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Neville believes Sterling's desire to move on presents the latest evidence that Liverpool are a fading force.

“The harsh reality for the club is that this situation has been 15 years in the making,” Neville wrote. “There is a wider context to this story and it centres on how Liverpool have gone from being from one Europe’s great superpowers to one which is in danger of becoming a provincial club.

“The uncomfortable truth is that this is nothing new for Liverpool. Just look back over the past 10 to 15 years and count the number of players who have left Anfield to pursue bigger and better things elsewhere.

“Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez have all gone.”

Although Neville acknowledges that Liverpool remain alongside Manchester United in terms of global appeal, he feels the club have been responsible for their own decline.

“While United have been happy to shout from the rooftops about how big they are and promote the legend and mythology of the club on a global scale for years, Liverpool seem to have been stuck in their own mud,” Neville added.

“They are years behind the biggest European clubs and, for me, their problems are a direct result of that failure to think beyond the confines of their city.

“Great football clubs like Liverpool will never go away, but they need to find a way to arrest the slide and make themselves a team that players want to play for rather than one they try to leave in search of bigger things elsewhere.

“If Sterling leaves, then that will be another star player who has decided that Liverpool is a club that is unable to match their ambitions.”

James Milner and Yaya Toure: Uncertain futures

James Milner and Yaya Toure: Uncertain futures

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is in the dark over the futures of midfielders Yaya Toure and James Milner.

Ivory Coast star Toure, 32, has been tipped to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer after his agent claimed he was "90 per cent certain" to leave the Etihad Stadium.

England international Milner, 29, is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and has held off opening negotiations over an extension.

When asked about the future of Toure, Pellegrini said: "Same as James Milner - we have to analyse the whole squad at the end of the season and then we will see which is the best for the club and the player.

"James must decide what he wants to do for his future. That just belongs to him. He asked the club to allow him to take the decision at the end of the season. He will do it in the right moment.

"There are a lot of things we must think about for the future. We will try to do it as well as we can."

Pellegrini was equally coy over reports City will attempt to lure England winger Raheem Sterling away from Liverpool when the season is over.

The Chilean said: "Same answer that I gave you last week - I don't talk about rumours.

"There are a lot of very important players that maybe all the teams are wanting. I don't know what happens with Sterling or all the other players.

"We finish the season on Sunday. After that we will see what we need and which players can come here."

City wrap up a disappointing defence of their 2013/2014 Premier League title when they host Southampton on Sunday.

Charlie Nicholas: Make Theo Walcott feel wanted or risk losing him

Charlie Nicholas: Make Theo Walcott feel wanted or risk losing him

Charlie Nicholas fears that Arsenal could lose Theo Walcott this summer if Arsene Wenger fails to make him feel like an integral member of the team.

Walcott returned from injury in January but has failed to establish himself as a regular in Wenger’s starting line-up, making just three Premier League starts and 10 substitute appearances.

The Gunners host West Brom in the final game of the campaign on Sunday before taking on Aston Villa in the FA Cup final on the following Saturday, and Nicholas has urged Wenger to give Walcott his chance.

He told Sky Sports: “I’m definitely concerned that if Theo doesn’t feel part of the team that he might want to leave.

“Liverpool must be looking at him given what’s happening with Raheem Sterling right now and he’s still at a great age to sign.

“I’m a big fan of Theo and this he has showed enormous maturity in trying to prove himself as a centre-forward, but if he doesn’t feel like he’s competing for a starting position then he’ll be tempted to leave.

“I thought he should have started against Sunderland and he should definitely be given a chance to prove a point against West Brom. He could play and important role in the FA Cup final with (Olivier) Giroud struggling for form.

“The same applies for Jack Wilshere, who hasn’t really had a chance either as the team were in great form when he returned form injury.”

Arsene Wenger insists Raheem Sterling is not necessarily to blame for difficult contract talks with Liverpool.

Liverpool cancelled contract talks with Sterling scheduled for Friday and the 20-year-old was booed at the club's award ceremony on Tuesday.

Wenger believes it is better for clubs to conduct their business behind closed doors and said this is when the most effective transfers are done.

Wenger accepts players are heavily linked to their agents as they come as a package so it is important to acknowledge a story may come from an agent.

"I don’t want to single out people but discretion is the best way to deal with things," said Wenger. "For us, it adds difficulties when it is public.

"I am not sure it is the player causing the problem. They [a player and agent] come as a package that is true, but the problems do not always come from the player, sometimes from the package.

"You know how it works. The agent's interest is to put a story in public. Always the best deals we have done is when it was quiet and secret."

Brendan Rodgers expects Raheem Sterling to stay at Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers says he expects Raheem Sterling to stay at the club despite transfer speculation regarding his future.

Rodgers said he expects Raheem Sterling to see through the remaining two years of his contract and that the England striker is available for selection against Stoke.

Sterling has been linked with a move away from Liverpool and talks over his future scheduled for Friday were cancelled by the club.

The 20-year-old was booed by some Liverpool fans as he accepted the Young Player of the Year award at Tuesday night’s end of season awards ceremony.

Rodgers expects a positive reaction from the Liverpool supporters on Sunday and insists they will give Sterling their backing during their final game of the season against Stoke.

"Raheem has two years left and I expect him to see that two years through and continue to behave as immaculately as he has done.

"We want to resolve (contract) situation but it doesn't change my approach to him. There is no problem there.

"Ownership have shown their strength in their time here. When they have had to show that strength with players they have done that."

Roy Hodgson has mounted a passionate defence of Raheem Sterling after more drama with the Liverpool forward's contract saga.

Sterling was due to hold talks with Liverpool on Friday and, according to Sky sources, was preparing to tell the club he would not be signing an extension to his current deal.

That meeting has now been scrapped by Liverpool, and it is understood their stance remains the same: Sterling has two years to run on his contract and is not for sale.

In the meantime Sterling and his agent Aidy Ward have been criticised by Liverpool greats Jamie Carragher and Phil Thompson on Sky Sports, while the player has been jeered at the club's awards ceremony.

None of that deterred Hodgson from including Sterling in his latest England squad, and the manager says the 20-year-old deserves sympathy rather than abuse.

"I trust him implicitly," Hodgson said. "I think he's a very important person and a very important player for England going forward. I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't continue to kick on and get even better as he gets older.

"And I really do sympathise with these players who, if you like, have got to live their lives under scrutiny - sometimes of their making, sometimes of other people's making - and they've got to deal with it.

"I worry for all these young players, to be honest. They become stars very quickly. Their period of potential stardom doesn't last for very long these days. Sometimes, a few games in the Premier League and you are a star.

"We should never forget we're dealing with very young people. I believe from what I know of Raheem that he's strong enough to compartmentalise his life - from this side to what happens on the field of play, which is what interests me."

Hodgson earlier said he would not be "poking my nose in" to the row and called Sterling's chanracter "absolutely spot-on".
