The ‘Celebration of the 96’ event, which has been planned by the Hillsborough Family Support Group with support from Liverpool FC, will include a 90 minute match between local Liverpool legends vs international Liverpool legends, and a community football session on the pitch with first team, academy and ladies players all involved.

Fans who buy a ticket by Friday 4th April 2014 will also have the chance to enter a competition to go onto the pitch at Anfield to meet with first team players and put a question to one of them as part of a Q&A session.

Tickets for this very special one-off event will be priced at just £15 for an adult and £5 for kids. All proceeds will be split between the Hillsborough Family Support Group and LFC’s charity, the Liverpool FC Foundation, which will be put back into the local community through the Foundation’s programmes.

More details of this celebratory event will follow but some of the legends who will be playing for the LFC local team, which will be managed by Kenny Dalglish, are: David James, Jamie Carragher, Gary McAllister, Ray Houghton, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Peter Beardsley and John Barnes.

The LFC international team, which will be managed by Gérard Houllier, will include: Luis Garcia, Markus Babbel, Jan Molby, Stephane Henchoz, Stig Inge Bjornebye, Dietmar Hamann and Vladimir Smicer all confirmed.

There will also be plenty of pre-match entertainment before Kick-off at 2pm.

Margaret Aspinall, Chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: “We wanted to host an event to celebrate the lives of the 96 and give people the opportunity to come to Anfield for a fun afternoon.

“We’ve decided to split the proceeds with LFC’s Foundation so it will not only support the families but also support the future generations within the Liverpool community.

“It’s great to see the current and former Liverpool players showing their support in numbers and I hope a lot of people will come along to join us on the day.”

Kenny Dalglish, added: “This is a great opportunity for the families and fans to come together at Anfield for a celebration in honour of the 96.

“Everyone here at Liverpool Football Club is behind this event and it is also great to see so many former players travelling in to make this a special day.”

Tickets will initially be available to season ticket holders and LFC members from Friday 28th February 2014, with a general sale to follow week commencing 10th March 2014.

Do Liverpool have a real chance of something special this season? Matt Sproston certainly thinks so.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, February 23, 2014: Liverpool's scoreboard records the dramatic 4-3 victory over Swansea City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Another win in the bag. More free flowing, attacking football. Easy on the eye but not on the nerves. Confidence and a winning mentality is growing each time the team takes to the field.

Two seasons ago an attraction to the woodwork prevented us from achieving a top four finish. Last season, a change of management and squad shake up resulted in a woeful start to the season which ultimately could not be corrected with a promising run in. This season our ambitions may only be thwarted by the fragility of the defence.

I say “our ambitions” but in reality these have changed from the start of the season. I would imagine that the initial ambition was to improve on last season with an outside chance of the top four. As the season progressed a proper push for the top four became a realistic target.

Brendan won’t say it and I doubt that you will catch many of the players saying it but the target now is to win the league. It is obvious from the way the team is being set up (even against the so-called bigger teams) that the aim is to take the game to our opponents from the kick off. We have taken early leads against City, Chelsea, United, Everton (twice), Spurs and Arsenal and are 10 points better off than in those corresponding fixtures last season.

The make up of the squad does limit selection options but the apparent lack of interest in bolstering the defensive midfield position in the transfer window and the continuing use of Gerrard in a holding role suggests that Brendan sees all out attack as the best form of defence.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, February 23, 2014: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel looks dejected as Swansea City score the third goal during the Premiership match against Liverpoolg at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The shakiness has spread like a virus throughout the defence. Early season solidity from Skrtel has given way to bizarre decision making. Agger was dominated by Bony to the extent that he was substituted. The affection of the fans towards Toure built up by enthusiastic early season performances has largely dissipated following calamitous unforced errors. And then there’s the full backs….

The balance of shoring up the defence without losing the potency going forward is one that Brendan will probably have to find if he is to bring the ultimate prize back to Anfield. However, history suggests that even an underperforming defence is not a barrier to winning the title.

In the last 20 Premier League seasons, the title has gone to the team that scored the most goals on 14 occasions (70%). On 5 occasions it has gone to the team with the second highest goals for tally and in 97-98 Arsenal won the league having scored the third highest number.

In the same period, the league winner has had the lowest goals conceded on only 8 occasions (40%). However, in contrast to goals scored records, the team with the fifth or sixth best goals against record has won the league on 3 occasions. Put it another way, more often than not the team that wins the title does not have the strongest defence.

For overall goal difference the team with the best goal difference has won the league on 16 of the last 20 seasons (80%). The league has never been won by a team in that period with less than the second best goal difference.

If those patterns are followed this season, based on the current and projected goal differences the winner will be either Manchester City or Liverpool.

The league is always won by the team who wins the most games, that stands to reason. However, it is not true to say that the team who loses the least games always wins the league (Liverpool 2008-09).

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, February 23, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson celebrates scoring the second goal against Swansea City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

To my mind, a team that scores lots of goals is likely to win games whereas a team that concedes few goals is not likely to lose many games. There is a difference, the difference is draws.

Our last real tilt at the title (2008-09) failed due to 11 draws compared to Man United’s 6. Turn those five extra draws into 1 win, 2 draws and 2 defeats and Liverpool would have won the league.

I’m not advocating glorious failure, after all we aren’t Keegan’s Newcastle, but while we don’t have the personnel to grind out a one-nil win I am happy for Brendan to keep unleashing Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling, Coutinho, Gerrard and Henderson safe in the knowledge that history suggests we have a real chance of something very special.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has revealed that he is sometimes told by coaches at the club to rest, rather than pushing himself with extra training.

Henderson was on target twice for Liverpool during their 4-3 victory over Swansea City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The 23-year-old has often been described a workhorse for his constant running within Premier League games for the team.

On Twitter, the former Sunderland man has also earned the hashtag #RunHendoRun amongst some fans.

“Sometimes I need people to tell me to rest,” Henderson told the club’s official website.

“After training, I like to do a little bit extra. A few of us do a bit of shooting or whatever it might be, but sometimes you need to give your legs a rest and prepare for the game in the best way that you can.

“We have the right people at the club to tell you when you can and when you can’t do the extra bit.”

Henderson has grown and grown as a player since Brendan Rodgers arrived on Merseyside in the summer of 2012, and is now a vital part of the mechanics that has made such as successful season for Liverpool.

Henderson revealed that his success and athleticism on the pitch is down to hard work, and working with the club’s Head of Fitness and Conditioning, Ryland Morgans.

He added, “We have the right fitness coaches in Ryland [Morgans] and people in the gym. They make sure that you are at your best physically.

“Some days we’ll do strength training and sprint training just to make sure we’re in the best condition we can be. All the credit has to go them. If we do it as they say, then we should be in great shape for the weekend.

“But we need to recover well too. It’s just as important after the game that you make sure you recover the best you can in terms of getting the right food down you.

“Then you need a couple of days’ recovery in the pool, doing stretches and things like that. I think 24 to 48 hours after a game is vital in terms of your preparation for the next game.”

Henderson and Liverpool are now looking ahead to Saturday’s Premier League clash away at Southampton.

Victory could take the Reds second in the league table with 10 games to go, depending on other results.

Kick-off at St Mary’s is 5.30pm and it’s live on Sky Sports 1.

>Following an impressive performance against Swansea last weekend, Jack Lusby (@LusbyLatest) believes Joe Allen is proving his worth to Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers.

Prior to Liverpool’s 5-1 annihilation of Arsenal at the beginning of February, statistical analysts Anfield Index ran a poll via their Twitter feed, asking whether Joe Allen should start in favour of Phillipe Coutinho for the tie.

The results were fairly comprehensive:

http://ift.tt/1hgtQct

Taking a small audience sample, the 78 percent clearly preferred Liverpool’s diminutive Welshman over his Brazilian counterpart.

The perceived notion was that Allen, as a confident ball-player and strong midfield presence, would allow Liverpool to dominate the middle of the park in what is arguably Arsenal’s strongest area.

Obviously, Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers plumped for the dynamic Coutinho, who responded with a superlative display.

According to Squawka, the playmaker boasted a team-best of five chances created, with one assist.

Allen has since failed to make the starting line-up for a Premier League encounter. However the Welshman included for the FA Cup loss at Arsenal, with Jordan Henderson struggling following wrist surgery.

With Henderson and Steven Gerrard forming a consistent base in Rodgers’ midfield, and Coutinho providing several of the enigmatic performances of late that previously made him undroppable, it seems a difficult task for Allen to force his way back into the team.

Swansea, 4-3

On Sunday, introduced in place of the continually impressive Raheem Sterling on 58 minutes, Allen entered the Anfield cauldron with performances fraught.

Prior to his introduction, Liverpool struggled to maintain possession and, caught on the break more often than not, lacklustre defending allowed Swansea to equalise on three occasions.

With the game poised at 3-3, Allen was surely brought on to provide an extra body to supplement a stretched midfield three, and this proved a masterstroke by Rodgers.

Previously perceived as a master passer, with risible ‘Welsh Xavi’ comparisons rampant, the ex-Swansea man is now seemingly developing his game.

On his arrival at the club, Rodgers hailed Allen as unique, as the Daily Star reported:

“I would have paid many millions more for this kid. He’s unique in that he’s a British player who is incredible on the ball.”

Allen now seems more adept at breaking up play aggressively and statistics, via Anfield Index, prove this.

In 32 minutes on the pitch, Allen won five tackles and won possession seven times overall; only Glen Johnson and Steven Gerrard, as outfield players, bettered these feats respectively.

The Future for Allen – A Modified Midfield?

With Allen performing in Henderson’s previous role of the midfield engine – snapping at the heels of the opposition, breaking up play and keeping attacks moving – this possibly indicates the Welshman’s role for the club in the future.

Just as Gerrard has adapted his game to a more defensive role, Henderson has performed the opposite: a commanding display at Anfield on Sunday proving this.

As per the Daily Express, Brendan Rodgers has been instructing the 23-year-old to add a more attacking bent to his game:

“His first goal was an outstanding goal. We’ve been talking to him about getting up there [into the penalty area], because in training his finishing is sublime. He practises and he works at it.

“But what was really pleasing for me was his second goal. We’ve been telling him to get into the box and arrive in there, because he’s got the energy and the legs to do that.”

Rodgers’ words could’ve come from Gerard Houllier’s mouth 15 years ago, with the Frenchman key in Gerrard’s development.

Henderson’s two goals – the first a perfectly placed 20-yarder, the second the reward of attacking persistence – were reminiscent of Liverpool’s captain at his best.

With Gerrard and Henderson proving their versatility, it is perhaps time for Allen to adapt his game further; the possession stats prove this.

Who to Replace?

Whilst the introduction of Allen on Sunday was an inspired decision, what remains questionable was the decision of who to replace.

With Raheem Sterling near his effervescent best, it seemed unfair to withdraw the winger before the hour mark.

The Englishman’s performance was typified by an exquisite through-ball to set up Daniel Sturridge’s third-minute opener, displaying a vision beyond his 19 years.

With Sterling, Henderson and Gerrard all impressing of late, and with Rodgers an exponent of the midfield three, this leaves Coutinho.

The Brazilian, as mentioned above, has enthralled the Anfield faithful at times this season, most notably in home wins against Everton and Arsenal.

However, his form has definitely plummeted this season after a hugely impressive maiden campaign in the Premier League.

This season, Coutinho has a tackle success rate of 37 percent, a pass success rate of 79 percent and, most alarmingly, a shot accuracy rate of just 40 percent; all statistics courtesy of Squawka.

Coutinho or Allen?

With Liverpool’s attack continuing to shine, and the engine room operating astutely, there leaves little option for Brendan Rodgers when considering Joe Allen’s participation.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, January 1, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia in action against Hull City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Perhaps it would be valid to suggest that Rodgers follow predecessor Rafa Benitez’s tactical remit of rotation, particularly with Allen and Coutinho.

As Coutinho’s statistics have proven, especially compared to Allen’s, he can often get lost in a game.

Allen is seemingly contrary to this, his confidence in winning possession and also his infamous passing ability the antithesis to Coutinho’s physical inadequacies.

As impact players go, Coutinho surely serves as the more effective; his eye for a killer through-ball second to none in the current squad and could be employed when thwarted by a rigid defence.

With tough fixtures away to Southampton and Manchester United forthcoming, perhaps it is time Rodgers considered his trusty Welsh pass-master for a starting role.

Should Joe Allen be considered for a starting berth in the near future? And should Coutinho make way? Let us know in the comments below.
