“Dejan Lovren was perfect” — Brendan Rodgers hails Liverpool’s new £20m defender

Brendan Rodgers was delighted with his side’s performance in beating Borussia Dortmund 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday, and singled out new signing Dejan Lovren as having the “perfect” game.

Liverpool rounded off their summer of pre-season preparations in style with goals from Daniel Sturridge, Lovren, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson leading them to victory at a soggy Anfield.

Whilst the biggest applause of the afternoon was saved for a standing ovation of Philippe Coutinho after another sensational performance by the Brazilian, Rodgers was delighted by Croatian intentional Lovren and the clean sheet.

“I’ve been really pleased with all of the signings because they have all come in as part of our strategy and the types of profile of players that we want,” the Northern Irishman told press after the game.

“Of the two boys that played today, Dejan was perfect – he’s what we’ve been looking for since Jamie Carragher left. He’s a very dominant centre-half.

“He’ll go and attack the ball, reads the game incredibly well and you can see his leadership qualities with his talking and guidance of the back four.

“You also saw his range of pass on both sides, left foot and right foot. His pass into [Philippe] Coutinho for the first goal was wrapped in with his left foot and that creates the nick around the corner to get us the goal.

“Like he showed us last year, he is dominant in the air in the other box, attacking it. I thought he was excellent.”

Rodgers handed Anfield debuts to Lovren, Emre Can and new loan signing Javier Manquillo, whilst Rickie Lambert’s boyhood dream came true in the second-half when he came on to finish the game in front of the Kop.

“Manquillo was outstanding,” Rodgers added. “Just 20 and playing his first game at Anfield having only joined this week. His fitness level was very good.

“He’s the type of full-back I like – he can get tight to people, stop crosses and defend well, but also then has the energy to attack and get forward. He was very, very good.”

Rodgers also told BT Sport that he still expected some more work to be done in the transfer window before the end of August, but refused to be drawn into speculation that a deal for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno is close.

Liverpool now have a week until the Premier League gets underway with the visit of Southampton to Anfield on Sunday, 17th August.

Liverpool 4-0 Borussia Dortmund: Player Ratings

Liverpool produced a brilliant display to dispatch of Borussia Dortmund at Anfield on Sunday, and Henry Jackson rates each Reds star on the day.

SIMON MIGNOLET- 6 (out of 10)

The Belgian was completely untroubled throughout against a Dortmund side lacking no threat whatsoever going forward.

JAVIER MANQUILLO- 7

The 20-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut, looking good defensively and assured going forward. The real test will come when he makes his Premier League bow, however.

MARTIN SKRTEL- 7

Some had expected Mamadou Sakho to be Dejan Lovren’s partner at the back this season, but Skrtel produced another reliable display to cement his place in the Reds’ starting XI ahead of the clash with Southampton next weekend.

DEJAN LOVREN- 8

Lovren enjoyed a debut to remember, bringing a presence to the defence, displaying his excellence on the ball and scoring Liverpool’s second with a fine header from close-range.

GLEN JOHNSON- 6

The much-maligned 29-year-old produced a better performance than he has of late, looking happier at left-back than on the opposite flank.

He was good in possession, and looked a little more switched on than usual. Maybe the signing of Javier Manquillo has kicked him into gear.

STEVEN GERRARD- 7

The captain has had a fairly low-key pre-season, but he completely controlled the game against the German giants.

His passing was invariably spot on, while his defensive work was also very good.

EMRE CAN- 6

After some excellent displays in a Reds shirt so far, Can was quiet but solid against Jurgen Klopp’s side. Replaced by Lucas at the break.

JORDAN HENDERSON- 8

Henderson was fairly subdued in the first-half, compared to his recent high standards, but he was superb after the break.

The 24-year-old scored the Reds’ fourth goal from close-range, and showed some lovely touches and endless running throughout.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 9

Coutinho’s performance was absolutely sensational, and was as close to 10/10 as it gets. His vision was a joy to watch- his flick to set up Sturridge for the opener was particularly sublime- and he got a deserved goal in the second-half.

The 22-year-old will be Liverpool’s star man in 2014/15 on this evidence.

RAHEEM STERLING- 8

Although not as devastating as Coutinho, Sterling’s pace, trickery and inventiveness was extremely sharp from start to finish.

The 19-year-old set up his Brazilian teammate for Liverpool’s third, and their interplay with one another was absolutely fantastic.

DANIEL STURRIDGE- 7

The 24-year-old didn’t look at total sharpness, but he was still a constant threat.

He raced on to Coutinho’s pass to give his side the lead, finishing emphatically in the process, and showed great endeavour to supply Henderson with the Reds’ fourth.

Substitutes

LUCAS LEIVA (on for Can 46)- 6

A reliable cameo from the 27-year-old, although he was a little sloppy in possession.

JOSE ENRIQUE (on for Johnson 62)- 6

Showed some nice touches and attacking thrust, but the game was over as a contest by the time the Spaniard came on.

JORDAN IBE (on for Coutinho 71)- n/a

No time to make an impact.

RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Sturridge 74)- n/a

No time to make an impact.

JOE ALLEN (on for Henderson 78)- n/a

Liverpool warmed up for next weekend’s Premier League opener against Southampton with an emphatic victory over Borussia Dortmund, with Philippe Coutinho in sensational form and Dejan Lovren scoring on his Reds debut.

Brendan Rodgers named arguably his strongest possible side for Liverpool’s final pre-season game of the summer, as the Northern Irishman prepared for next Sunday’s Premier League opener at home to Southampton.

Javier Manquillo, Dejan Lovren and Emre Can were all handed their Anfield debuts, in a side also containing key players Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.

It was a total of four changes from the side that lost to Manchester United at the start of the week, with Martin Kelly, Mamadou Sakho, Joe Allen and Rickie Lambert making way for Manquillo, Lovren, Can and Sturridge.

Sterling had Liverpool’s first decent effort on goal, testing Mitchell Langerak following a typically incisive pass from Coutinho.

The brilliant Brazilian then made the opening goal of the contest after just nine minutes, producing a sensational touch to find Sturridge, who finished clinically. It was another standout moment in an outstanding pre-season for Coutinho.

Four minutes later the lead was doubled, as Lovren enjoyed a moment he will never forget. The £20m signing powered home a header from Gerrard’s corner to make it 2-0, as the Reds showed signs of continuing their remarkable goalscoring form of last season.

Coutinho continued to dazzle, first firing wide from a Sterling pass then returning the favour which a terrific ball which the young Englishman failed to make the most of.

Dortmund started to enjoy more possession as the half progressed, but did little with the ball. Gerrard tested Langerak with a free-kick just before half-time, and the two sides left the pitch at the break with the hosts in total control.

It took just three minutes for Liverpool to add a third, and unsurprisingly it was Sterling and Coutinho who were again involved. The former found the 22-year-old with a clever ball, and he fired home from the angle.

The quality of the Reds’ football was a joy to watch, with slick passing, pace and creativity on display in abundance.

On the hour mark it was 4-0. Sturridge’s endeavour to keep the ball in play- it actually went out- eventually saw him find Jordan Henderson, who finished from close-range in front of the Kop.

The intensity of the game died a little once numerous substitutes began being introduced. Coutinho was deservedly given a standing ovation as he left the pitch after 71 minutes.

The match continued to peter out, but as Martin Atkinson blew the final whistle it signalled the end of a terrific all-round performance by Liverpool, and the perfect way to prepare for their assault on the 2014/15 season.

Tactical Overview

Rodgers opted for the 4-3-3 formation from the start, with Johnson at left-back and Manquillo on the right. Can and Henderson pushed forward from midfield with Gerrard sat deep, while Coutinho and Sterling supported Sturridge from wide areas.

The high-intensity pressing and fluent football was out in full force at Anfield, and Dortmund simply couldn’t cope.
