Liverpool fans react to Daniel Agger’s departure

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to discuss Daniel Agger‘s departure from the club after he sealed a return to his former club Brondby on Saturday.

Agger leaves Anfield after eight years and 232 appearances for the club. He scored 14 goals in that time and won the hearts of many fans with his devotion to the club.

Even upon his exit this weekend, Agger revealed, “I wouldn’t leave here to go anywhere else and that has been proven by my actions in recent seasons – I have turned down many offers to move to other Premier League and European clubs.”

It is understood the Reds will receive around £3 million from Brondby for Agger, who was linked with a move to both Manchester City and Barcelona only last summer.

A recurrent back problem has caused Agger’s career to slip, struggling to remain part of Liverpool’s first team as Brendan Rodgers‘ side went from strength to strength.

The arrivals of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain last summer and Dejan Lovren this year had further made game time opportunities tougher for the 29-year-old.

Nevertheless, Agger was a popular figure at Liverpool throughout his stay, absorbing himself into the passion and culture of the city. For that reason, he will be sorely missed.

Brendan Rodgers on Daniel Agger’s Liverpool departure

Brendan Rodgers has wished Daniel Agger well for the future after the Danish international completed a return to his former club Brondby on Saturday.

Agger leaves Merseyside eight years after arriving, having made 232 appearances and scoring 14 goals for the Reds.

“We wish Daniel and his family well for the future,” Rodgers told the club’s official website. “We’ve been discussing Daniel’s future with him during the close season and I know this is a decision he has reached after much soul searching and deliberation.

“Daniel loves Liverpool and the club’s supporters, and has a unique connection with them.”

Injury problems have hampered Agger’s career for some time, and the arrival of Croatian defender Dejan Lovren put the 29-year-old further down Rodgers’ defensive pecking order.

Rodgers added, “When we had the privilege to play Brondby in pre-season, we saw the esteem he is held in and I can understand why he would want to return there.

“On behalf of everyone at Liverpool, I thank Daniel for his service to the club and hope he finishes his career with some happy times in Denmark.”

It is understood Liverpool will receive around £3 million from Brondby.
