England 1–0 Norway: Raheem Sterling Superbly Defies Hodgson’s Tactics

With another man-of-the-match performance under his belt for England, Raheem Sterling proved his ability to transcend a poor tactical layout, Jack Lusby writes.

We all know Roy Hodgson is a managerial philistine.

This is a manager who signed Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Christian Poulsen and Paul Konchesky for Liverpool during a miserable 2010 summer transfer window.

This is a manager who oversaw a phenomenal drop in attendances during his tenure as Reds boss.

Therefore, from a Liverpool fans’ perspective, it is all the more risible to witness the England steward bemoan attendances, opposition quality and statistical evidence; all, ostensibly, Hodgson’s reasoning behind the national team’s poor showings of late.

Hodgson took umbrage when told his team had just two shots on target against Norway on Wednesday night, proffering “when we had that much possession, and you talk about two shots on target?”

The 67-year-old also claims England’s upcoming European Championships qualifiers “won’t excite” fans, due to the nature of the opposition—including World Cup surprise package Switzerland.

The reality is that no side managed by Hodgson will likely excite fans; Wembley will never be packed out under the former Fulham manager.

One shining light against Norway, despite all of this, was Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, a player who managed to defied the tactical ineptitude of the England boss in a malleable, persistent display.

It is in this display, for which Sterling was awarded man-of-the-match, that the 19-year-old once more displayed a growing maturity following a mixed set of performances at the World Cup.

In a Mike Bassett-esque turn, Hodgson set out his England charges in a rigid 4-4-2 formation on Wednesday night, with Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the wide options, flanking Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere in the centre of midfield.

In Brazil over the summer, bolted out in a wide role, Sterling suffered; a muted performance against Uruguay underlining this.

However, at Wembley the Liverpool forward continued his fine start to the season with some excellent link-up play with Daniel Sturridge in particular.

This will come as no surprise, given the way the Reds pair have begun 2014/15 under Brendan Rodgers.

Sterling’s willingness to come inside and aid England’s attacking pair—brought down by the reductive Rooney, dropping deep into midfield at whim—seemed to defy the rigid tactics of Hodgson.

Oxlade-Chamberlain remained more of a traditional winger, but Sterling’s tendency towards the central role was abundantly clear.

This is despite Sterling’s young years, a facet Liverpool fans have become to know all too well.

The forward was England’s most creative outlet on the night, with a burst into the box enough to thwart the Norwegian defensive ranks and earn a penalty for the Three Lions.

Rooney, captaining England for the first time since his bizarre official appointment by Hodgson—Henderson is a more durable, progressive candidate—despatched the spot-kick with professional class.

It was with the introduction of Fabian Delph, and Sterling’s subsequent move into the No. 10 role and a transition to the midfield diamond for England, that Hodgson has earned his plaudits, albeit scant in their nature.

This should be of no surprise to, nor should it be a ‘Plan B’ for, the prehistoric Hodgson.

Sterling has been excelling in the central role under Rodgers at Liverpool since the latter stages of last season, during a phenomenal spell for all involved on Merseyside.

Following the game, a member of ITV’s impossibly vapid panel of ex-pros offered the unique insight that Sterling has become “one of the key players” in the England squad.

No surprise there, right?

Writing for Bleacher Report, Sam Tighe astutely outlined how this move to the diamond allowed “Sterling a path centrally, balancing the formation out very well.”

This could be attributed as a tactical masterstroke by Hodgson, but the fact that this occurred with just 20 minutes of play to go shows that this was more of an afterthought by the England manager.

Sterling’s play throughout suggested this is the way forward for the Three Lions, yet it took Hodgson over an hour to realise this.

Delph, making his senior international debut, will never be described as one of a new ‘golden generation,’ and it has been argued of late that there is no crop of highly-talented, young English players coming through.

If Hodgson continues to select players of the ilk of Delph, Danny Rose and Jack Colback—all important players for their club sides, it must be conceded—this can be debated.

The names James Ward-Prowse, Eric Dier and Saido Berahino mean nothing to the England manager at this point, clearly.

Sterling stands as the bastion of English youth at this juncture, and the performance of the 19-year-old, defying the disappointing yet unsurprising tactics of Hodgson throughout the majority of Wednesday night’s victory, suggests that this will continue whilst the 67-year-old remains in charge.

Moving the Liverpool forward to the No. 10 role will see Hodgson receive adulation by some quarters but it is Sterling’s performance prior to this that highlights a growing importance for both club and country.

Victor Valdes “agrees personal terms” with Liverpool

Victor Valdes will fly in to Merseyside in the near future for a medical after agreeing personal terms on a move to Liverpool, according to reports on Thursday.

News of the Reds’ interest in the former Barcelona goalkeeper emerged on Monday, transfer deadline day, and with Valdes a free agent, a deal can still be made despite the passing of the summer transfer window.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague confirmed in his column on Bleacher Report, “The club and the player have agreed personal terms—Brendan Rodgers and Valdes share a mutual admiration of each other so, pending a medical, he will end up at Anfield.”

The 32-year-old shotstopper tore an anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a La Liga game for Barcelona back in March, ending his career at the Campo Nou.

Doubts remain over his fitness, with Simon Jones of the Daily Mail suggesting earlier this week that Valdes won’t be available to play until December.

Due to this, Metro report:

Brendan Rodgers has ordered a thorough test for Valdes, who has been nursing anterior cruciate ligament damage, which has ruled him out since March.

During his 12 years with Barcelona, Valdes racked up 535 appearances for the Catalan giants, but born into a generation of talented Spanish goalkeepers including Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina, has only won 20 caps for Spain.

Nevertheless, the arrival of experienced and medal-decorated Valdes to Liverpool would surely give more adequate cover for Simon Mignolet than Brad Jones, and healthy competition for the Belgium international’s place.

Victor Valdes

Valdes walked away from Barcelona in search of a new challenge after winning three Champions Leagues and six Primera Liga titles for the Catalan club, but a move to AS Monaco broke down following injury problems.

Despite that setback, the Spain international should be in the prime of his career as a 32-year-old goalkeeper and there is plenty of time for him to contribute significantly at a top club.

Any of the big guns with doubts over their first-choice keeper could be interested but, at the time of writing, a move to Liverpool appears imminent.

Anthony Reveillere

The experienced right-back was last seen at Napoli and boasts an impressive pedigree having played 20 times for France.

He was part of his country's 2010 World Cup squad, also featuring at Euro 2012, and the long-time Lyon man could still do a job for someone at the age of 34.

Having also played in Spain for Valencia as well as those stints in France and Italy, he is a player likely to attract interest from across Europe's big leagues.

Carlos Marchena

Marchena was part of the Spain success story in the squad that won Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. Indeed, the central defender went an unprecedented 50 games unbeaten in international football, beating the record of Brazilian icon Garrincha.

Those days at the top are now over at the age of 35 but he was still capable enough to play regularly in Deportivo La Coruna's promotion-winning campaign last season and could add experience to a back line in need of help.

Modibo Diakite

After a lengthy career at Lazio, the French defender moved to Sunderland last summer with little success and had his contract cancelled at Stadium of Light.

Diakite was part of a failed influx of new arrivals during the Paolo di Canio reign and was soon shipped out on loan to Fiorentina, where he spent the back end of last season.

Despite the career misstep, the 27-year-old has time on his side and the best years might be ahead of him. It's all about the next move.

Andrea Dossena

Dossena is another who failed to ignite at Sunderland last season but has an impressive CV to his name having played for Liverpool as well as a host of Serie A sides.

The Italian's most impressive performances came in his time at Napoli, where he operated as a left wing-back, and the renewed popularity of the formation could make the 32-year-old an intriguing option for various clubs tinkering with the system

Ronaldinho

The former Ballon d'Or winner was captain on Brazil as recently as April 2013 and went on to help Atletico Mineiro to Copa Libertadores success later that summer. But after falling out of favour with Luis Felipe Scolari, things have declined rapidly for the iconic former Barcelona star and he is now a free agent weighing up options in lesser leagues around the world. Will someone be willing to offer him one final throw of the dice in Europe?

Alou Diarra

Diarra featured briefly for West Ham last season but left the club by mutual consent this summer.

The veteran France international midfielder certainly has pedigree after spells at Bayern Munich and Liverpool early in his career but that's a long time ago now and Diarra has not featured for his country since 2012, enduring an unsuccessful loan spell at Rennes the following year.

He would surely be a stop-gap move at best for a club looking to add numbers.

Sotiris Ninis

The one-time great hope for Greek football has had an alarming fall from grace in recent years. After becoming the youngest player ever to score for Greece at the age of 18, Ninis featured at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 but his career has since stalled and he was omitted from the national team squad for the tournament in Brazil. Released by Italian club Parma, the tricky midfielder finds himself without a club at the age of 24.

Florent Malouda

The 34-year-old France international winger has enjoyed a fine career at home and abroad with the likes of Lyon and Chelsea.

Malouda last featured for the Blues as a substitute in their 2012 Champions League win but his career subsequently stalled after sitting out the final year of a lucrative deal at Stamford Bridge.

After a brief stay with Trabzonspor he is available again and might be an option for clubs looking for proven quality.

Nilmar

The Brazil international forward has been playing in the Middle East since 2012 but is now available on a free transfer after having his Al-Jaish contract cancelled by mutual consent this summer.

The skilful striker only recently turned 30 and if he can even come close to replicate his Villarreal form he could prove a useful buy.

Nilmar hit 18 goals for the Yellow Submarine in the 2010/11 season and has nine goals to his name from 23 appearances for Brazil.

Hugo Almeida

The burly striker was part of Portugal's World Cup starting line-up for their opening game against Germany in the summer but was injured in the first half and now finds himself still without a club following his Besiktas exit.

Pace was never a strength and is likely to be a growing issue now he's turned 30, but Almeida is an effective and consistent target man.

He's reached double figures in all competitions in each of the last seven seasons and could do a good job for someone.
