The last international break saw three players return to Liverpool with injuries ruling them out for at least a month and now £20 million centre-back Dejan Lovren is the latest to suffer injury for his country.
No details of the injury have yet been revealed, with only a tweet from the Croatian Football Federation indicating the news, saying “Good luck with the recovery”.
One journalist, Ben Dinnery, claims he has been withdrawn due to an abdominal injury. The timescale on such a problem isn’t known at this stage and will largely depend, obviously, on the severity of such.
Lovren has been an ever-present in Liverpool’s defence since his arrival from Southampton in the summer, ousting Mamadou Sakho as Martin Skrtel’s centre-back partner.
Lovren’s start to his career has been mixed though, with the calamitous challenge to give away a penalty against West Brom on Saturday the latest to blot his copybook. He’s been far from the steadying, leading presence Brendan Rodgers proffered that he would be in pre-season.
Sakho is currently sidelined with an injury he sustained shortly after his pre-Everton walkout and isn’t pencilled in for a return until late October.
That leaves Liverpool with only Skrtel and Kolo Toure as their available centre-backs if Lovren’s injury keeps him out of the QPR game a week on Sunday.

After an injury-stricken start to his Liverpool career, Adam Lallana bagged his first goal for the club against West Brom last weekend. The delight was evident on the Englishman’s face after his spark of magic gave Liverpool the lead in a tight encounter with the Baggies.
Lallana showed the Premier League his talent and capability at the top level last season for Southampton, scoring nine goals, assisting six and creating 71 chances. It was these performances that caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers and following a long transfer saga in the summer, Liverpool eventually captured their new No. 20.
It was no secret that Rodgers was a huge admirer of the silky midfielder and it was evident Liverpool were prepared to arguably pay over the odds to land their man and support the manager.
Testing Beginning
Returning from a knee injury that kept the new man out for six weeks, Lallana’s eventual debut for the Reds was certainly one to forget. Although indisputably a top class player, the 26-year-old worryingly looked the shadow of the player he was at Southampton last season.
A wreckless challenge on Aston Villa’s Tom Cleverly early in the game exposed his eagerness to impress, but his resulting yellow card effectively restricted the midfielder’s capability of closing down the opposition for the rest of the afternoon.
Understandably Lallana looked noticeably off the pace and his debut came to a disappointing end when substituted after just 60 minutes. An exciting and meaningful day for the attack minded player but certainly not one for the record books.
His lack of match fitness along with a poor display from his teammates cost the reds dearly as they slumped to a 1-0 home defeat.
Growing Presence
With Liverpool’s slow start to the 2014/2015 campaign, very few players have been able to add that little bit of magic the team currently lack. Lallana has begun to progressively fit into the team agreeably over recent weeks with superb displays against local rivals Everton and most recent, West Brom.
Although not the quickest player, the England international has began to offer the trickery, intensity and versatility that fans anticipated and have become so accustomed to watching week in, week out.
As he has gained valuable match fitness, his sharpness and willingness to close down the opposition has become more visible. His performances have stepped up a gear and he has slowly begun to show Liverpool fans why Rodgers was right to fight for his signature over the summer.
Bright Future
With the vast majority of teams taking a defensive approach to games at Anfield, it’s pivotal that creative players such as Lallana and Phillipe Coutinho are on top form. And with the festive period fast approaching, it is even more important for the Reds that they keep their £23 million star man fit.
Beard or no beard, Lallana adds the sparkle that some games miss, with his first touch often taking defenders out of the game. With the positive return of Daniel Sturridge and unsung hero Joe Allen after the international break, Lallana will begin to get that extra freedom on the pitch.
With Sturridge more likely to make runs behind the opposition, the former Southampton man will no doubt provide defence splitting passes and showcase his ability to somewhat dance around defenders.
Jordan Henderson offered his support for his club and international teammate after Saturday’s win, noting the importance of Lallana’s role in the squad:
“He will be a big player for us this season so hopefully he will keep doing that [scoring]. He gets on the front foot well. You can fizz it into him and he will always take his touch forward, gets in behind their midfield and drives us on, which is very important.”
With work rate similar to that of Liverpool’s new vice-captain, Lallana can only further improve and grow to be popular with the Anfield faithful. As he is evidently gaining match fitness as the week’s progress, the price tag may just become that little bit more justifiable.
For Lallana this is just the beginning. It is only a matter of time before he will hit the playing levels of last season. And at the age of 26, there is no doubt that he will become an even better player at Liverpool under the guidance of Rodgers and his captain Steven Gerrard.

The international break means a lack of stories for the tabloids so they’ve wasted no time in turning their attentions to writing some wonderfully creative transfer stories.
Following the well applied football rumour mill formula of adding two plus two to equal five, Liverpool are linked with a host of players this week – although, most of them are regurgitated names from the summer.
First up we have the actually believable latest on Victor Valdes. The latest being that the Spanish stopper will either have a trial, or undergo a medical, this month – depending on what you read / who you believe.
Either way, it seems Liverpool’s interest in Valdes is legitimate and a free transfer signing could be imminent, providing the experience and competition to Simon Mignolet.
Mind you, The Daily Star claimed on Wednesday that Liverpool were not just on alert, but RED ALERT (see what they did there) because Iker Casillas has said he once thought about moving abroad. Turns out those quotes were from a few months back.
Next up we have a great case of two plus two formula. Napoli’s Marek Hamsik has been quoted on his future saying “I prefer not to talk about that” – cue The Express explaining how that “the coy response is likely to set alarm bells ringing for any of the midfielder’s potential suitors.”
Back to The Daily Star and they claim Liverpool will offer Lucas and £22 million to Napoli’s Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain. They cite reports in Brazil and claim “Higuain is a key figure at the Italian side, but could be forced out as the club face up to life outside of the Champions League.”
Think we’ve heard that one before.
To you, to me. It’s The Express’ turn to link Liverpool with a forward they (probably) don’t have any interest in but have been linked with before so on a slow news week like this we’ll regurgitate it again. This time they drew out Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in the office tombola. Huntelaar is 31.
Back to The Daily Star we go, and this time it’s a new name – Lazio “wonderkid” Keita Balde Diao (somebody’s been playing too much Football Manager). They claim “according to new reports, the Reds are now ready to offer a deal closer to the £15m asking price first asked by Lazio to help beat their Premier League rivals to the signing.” Arsenal are also interested. Of course they are.
The prolific Chisanga Malata of The Daily Star also claims Liverpool are after Newcastle’s Cheick Tiote. The most incredible thing here is how many contacts and exclusives Malata has (especially for a man whose LinkedIn profile lists him as a waiter at Zizzi restaurants and part-time freelance journalist. Imagine all those Premier League managers dropping in his restaurant each night and telling him exclusives).
It must be The Express’ turn to draw a name out of thin air here; how about Yohan Cabaye? Yep, he’s unhappy at PSG and so could be heading back to the Premier League.
And, for one last hurrah today, The Metro (reporter with no name given) claim “Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Marco Reus with Borussia Dortmund already working on signing a replacement for him.”
Presumably you’ve either spilt your drink, dropped your phone or had a mild heart attack reading that last one so we’ll leave it there for today.
